Subject: Ajax Question
Hi Bob
First of all congratulations for such an interesting
website. (Thank you - Bob)
I am a football fan from Malta and am always eager to
read about the history and odd happenings of the
history of football. So I'll be a frequent visitor to
your site and even will try to take part in your
quizes.
And to test your knowledge, here's a question for
you. See if you can answer that.
What two rituals was Ajax physiotherapist Bernnie
Müller required to do for luck before every game in
the early 1970s?
Cheers
David
Farrugia
I had to admit I didn't
have a clue, so David emailed back..
Answer:
Müller had to wear his lucky ski hat and buy a
special osseworst sausage !

Alex Dawson
Hello
Bob,
I remember Alex Dawson, in fact to went to school
with him.
It was Westbourne street boy`s school. in Hull,
where he was the outstanding footballer in the
school. He was Scottish but actually played for
England Schoolboys on a number of occassions.
I remember him going to West Ham, but whether he ever
appeared for the first team I cnnot say, but I
believe that he did.
Alex was actually the last player to score a
hat-trick in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It was in
1958 just after the Munic crash, he played in
the first match after the crash and was a regular
with Man U for a number of years.
Alcopop
In the 70-71 season
Alex was at Brighton and Hove Albion, and also appeared on loan at
Brentford. My records show that he did in fact play for
Scottish Schoolboys, and I can't trace him at West Ham
United. I had no idea it was so long since a hatrick was
scored in a semi-final. Thanks Alcopop!
Subject: Billy
BREMNER...genealogy?
Hi Bob,
I have a website devoted to historical and
genealogical information http://www.brebner.com and would like to include
both a link to your site for Billy BREMNER and some
biographical information about him.
Would you have any details about his family,
grandparents etc. that might be useful?
Thanks in advance,
John
Just thought I would include
John's email so that any other Bremners who are passing
through the site could get in touch.
Subject: Ron Davies
Hi there, I
have been a Southampton fan since the age of 10, when
my father took me to The Dell for the first time in
Feb 1967, where we saw Saints beat West Ham 6-2
(Hurst, Moore, Peters et al
!)
My greatest hero was Ron Davies, who I idolized
as a schoolboy, and was without doubt the best centre
forward around at the time.
I have many happy memories of Saturday afternoons
watching him, from the old 'chocolate boxes' at the
Milton Road end, and from the corner by the clock at
the Archers Road end too. I remember a fantastic goal
he scored against Aston Villa in the last game of the
66/67 season, his shot rebounded back out of the
stanchion inside the goal virtually back to the
half-way line!
It wasn't only just headers that he scored!
He scored 4 at Old Trafford when Saints hammered Man
Utd,who was the last man to do that? I believe he
also hit 4 when Saints won 6-2 at Stamford Bridge,
and he regularly scored 30+ goals a season.
The sight of him out-jumping every centre-half
in the country, from Mike England to Ron Yeats, was a
wonderful thing for all Saints fans, and it was a
privilege to have been there during this golden era
for English football.
Kind
regards,
Selwyn

Great email Selwyn,
thanks very much. And Ron if you are out there get in
touch !

Subject: George
Best
Dear Sir
I was just reading your stunning reports on George
Best. Nice to see him mentioned as quotes in "Trainspotting" and Van Morrison´s
songs (at Glossary Best,
George).
However, I missed one, and that is particularily
Irish.
I think that Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy mentions him
as well. At the end of his most brilliant song
"Black Rose" it says:
"And Georgie knows Best"
I think this is worth another quote on your wonderful
HP.
Thank you
Martin from Germany
Great stuff, thanks Martin
Subject: John Charles of West Ham United
The West Ham Newcastle photo was from this game:
1969/1970 Sat 09 Aug West Ham Utd. 1 - 0 Newcastle
Utd. First Division, and from left to right the
players are John Charles, Jackie Sinclair
(Newcastle), Pop Robson (Newcastle), Davy Craig
(Newcastle) and Johnny Sissons of West Ham United
Hope that helps. Excellent site sir (Thanks - Bob)

who discussed it on the mailbases, and Sicknote for
telling me about it.

Footballers
Hi Bob
I'm glad you are still managing to keep the site
going. All my friends (big Chelsea supporters -
sorry!) have commented how good it is.
I thought I would drop you a line to wish Leeds all
the best in their struggle to survive on today of all
days - sincerely. You have a great guy in Trevor
Birch (ex-Chelsea of course!), and without Leeds,
there would be a huge hole in our "teams we
hate" list! *wink*
Do you think you will manage to open the
guestbook again, or is it proving too difficult?
Mark Law
Thanks for the
comments, Mark. I must admit an increase in work
commitments recently has meant a reduction in updates,
but it is still great fun to do, and I doubt will ever
stop.
Yes I've made
several efforts to get the guestbook up and running again
- sadly I can't find a free provider any more, and my
ISP's version is next to useless. I have such limited
computer time these days that I've never really devoted
sufficient effort to finding a solution. Sadly I'm not in
the League of writing my own program !
Well as a Leeds
season ticket holder these days, it is so good to see one
of my all time heroes (Eddie Gray) sorting things out. You've no
need to appologise for being Chelsea fans, as I believe I
say on the site, the '70 Cup Final makes binds our teams
in a funny way, and I just think that what's happened to
you lot is the football team equivalent of winning the
pools, and no one would begrudge a pools winner. ANYTHING
to knock the domination of the Premiership by Man U !
It's good to hear
that Birch has recommendations.

How many
times did Bobby Charlton get booked ?
James
Harvey
Anyone know ?
Help I'm
doing a quiz, who was W.B.A. full back in the 1970's
his first name and surname should both begin with
letter B. Thanks hope you can help
Christine Frost
Try Brendon Batson.
Hello Bob !
I am a Swedish man (46 years old). My favourite
player in Football History is Kevin
Keegan. (Especially his Hamburg years).
Who is your favorite Player ?
Now, not only can I
answer this, but I'm probably the best person to do so as
well. The answer as many regular visitors to the site
will know is Billy Bremner - see Billy
and the Number 4 shirt
Hi Bob, Are
your typhoo cards for sale by any
chance ? If so I would be interested in the Gordon
Banks one. Best wishes, Martin
Barnett
Well actually I don't
own any of the Typhoo pictures displayed on the
site. I got the images from www.ebay.co.uk, which if you haven't tried already you should
as it often has this type of item for sale. Just type
'Gordon Banks' into the search engine every so often and
one is bound to turn up eventually.
Could you
please tell me the names (players) of the Arsenal FA
Cup winners for 1970/71
Yes. Bob Wilson, Pat
Rice, Bob McNab, Peter
Storey (Substitute, Eddie Kelly
70 minutes), Frank McLintock, Peter
Simpson, George Armstrong, George
Graham, John Radford, Ray
Kennedy, Charlie George. See FA CUP Final 1971
Good morning to you.
I was asked a question. 3 Stoke players played
for England, they were the front 3 in the team. It
goes back a bit. Thanks for your help. Keith
Evans.
It only happened in the one
match, but Stanley Matthews, Freddie Steele and Joe
Johnson all played for Stoke City and England in the 3-1
defeat against Scotland on 17 April 1937. Steele got
England's goal.
Hello Bob,
Can you tell me the number of George Best, when he
played for Manchester United, thanks, Klaus Weidinge
This is quite a common
question to the site. I would settle for number 11, but
see the answer at Emails August 2000
G'day Bob,
could you please settle a problem between 2
Scouse Evertonians ? Where was Mike
Trebilcock born who played for Everton in
the 1966 F.A.Cup Final, which Everton won
3-2 against Sheffield Wednesday, I say he was born in
England [Cornwall ] my mate reckons Australia
Northern Terriorty. Cheers & thanks Bob
Henry
MacDonald
Mike was born in
Callington, Cornwall, but does now live in Australia
What
Division One club was Gordan Banks playing for when
he won the World Cup ?
Leicester City. He
moved to Stoke City in April 1967 under a year later.
Hi Bob, What is the
actual weight of the FA Cup?
James Poole
I was surprised that I couldn't
find this out myself. Does anyone know ?
Could you
let me know the name of Hull City's ground please ?
Thanks

Hi Bob - great site!
(Thanks - Bob) Any idea where I could get a
print/poster of Clyde Best ? The posters from the
link on the official website are prettty expensive.
Hope you can help - cheers, Ashoke
Well prints of the era
are expensive, yes. The only places I know they are
available are at http://ds.dial.pipex.com/bob.dunning/links.htm#commercial - scroll down to Prints
Can you
tell me who scored the last football goal at Wembley
and who was last team to beat England there. Thanks
Scott Wilson
Well as far as I'm
aware, the last football match at Wembley was England v
Germany on 7 October 2000. It was
the match that Germany won 1-0 and Keegan resigned as
England manager. The game was a World Cup qualifier,
so things looked terrible - then they appointed
Eriksson, Beckham got good, and England didn't look back.
The German goalscorer was Hamann, so I guess he was the
last scorer of a Wembley goal.
Please can you help.
I am trying to find out which two London clubs were
involved in the first Sunday league match in 1974.
Joyce Goulding
That was Millwall v
Fulham, on 20 January, 1974. 12 matches were played that
day, but this game kicked off the earliest at 11-30. I
have come across a recent article on this game which I
hope to include on the site in the near future.
Hi. Wonder
if you can help me? I'm trying to find out the
surname of "Roy" - who has been manager of
Derby County twice. Can you help? Best wishes and
many thanks, Dr Martin Cranmer
... McFarland, (see Derby
County).
Who was the
York City football club manager in 1984 ?
Denis Smith, the ex-Stoke
City player.
Which team were the
first to have a top 20 hit in 1971 ?
Thanx Steve
Arsenal had a hit in May 1971
with 'Good Old Arsenal', which reached
number 16 and was in the charts for 7 weeks.
