FKS 1970-71 - Huddersfield Town

Two West Yorkshire teams in the top division ... that's unheard of, isn't it ??? Given that West Yorksire wasn't created till 1974 it had not happened before Bradford City's promotion to the Premiership for the 1999-2000 season where they joined the more consistant Leeds United. Technicality's aside, the last time it happened was from 1970-72 when Huddersfield Town joined Leeds United in the top league.

Nowadays it's hard to imagine that 'the Terriers' were the Man U. of the 20's. Having stolen the disbanded Leeds City manager, Herbert Chapman, Huddersfield went on to win three consecutive Championships in 1923-24, 1924-25 and 1925-26, were runners up the two seasons after that, and had also won the F.A.Cup in 1922 ! But Leeds escaped lightly, there was talk of a Leeds / Huddersfield merger when Leeds City closed down !!!

But that's all ancient history to us non-octogenaians (or above). Though Huddersfield Town remained the top division mainstays until 1952, they have never been back since this brief spell ended in 1972, and are currently in League One.

The 70-71 team had some great players in it, indeed there is three future Leeds United players (Cherry, Ellam, and Worthington) and two players who ultimately completed the rare achievement of playing over 700 League games (Worthington and Chapman - see700+ Club). Above all else, though - it is the team with the highest proportion of unpronounceable names...
