Winter 2005 - 2006Bob's 1970 -71 DiaryGeorge Best Appeal Please visit http://www.ucl.ac.uk/liver-research/donation.html February 200627 February Life On Mars Anyone who enjoys a bit of 70s fun MUST have enjoyed 'Life On Mars' shown on BBC 1 for the last 8 weeks. Naturally, here at the home of Bob's 70-71Pages, there will be a gloom on Mondays until it returns again in 2007. I think the show's creators have been listening to my slightly more deranged 'if only' thoughts before coming up with this one. I can almost hear me saying to some poor person unable to run away fast enough, 'If only there was a 70s t.v.cop series, a bit like the Sweeney used to be, based on a David Bowie song and with plenty of 70s football references...ha,ha, and what if one of them keeps thinking he's from the modern day and points out how naff and 70s the others are all the time, hur, hur, it would be fabulous. I know they could set in Leeds...'. You see it must have been my thoughts they copied, it's just that they set it in Manchester just to get round the copyright, I swear. Anyway, the series was intelligent, hilarious, exciting and a perfect blend of 70s worship with Naughties sensibilities. It also mentioned in different episodes, Bobby Charlton (not a Sir, then, of course), Francis Lee (Manchester City), George Best, Lou Macari (Celtic), Denis Law, and Mike Summerbee (I think). In fact, we saw the backs of the heads of two of them in a nightclub - Francis Lee and Bobby Charlton (really, Bobby Charlton at a nightclub did they do no research...?) One episode completely centred on the Manchester derby, concluding with scenes of the fans walking to the game. And a signed 'cigarette card' of Bobby Charlton was central to the plot of the final episode of the series! Great stuff. Only an incredibly sad and boring 70s football nerd would have noticed it was in fact a bubblegum card, and then gone on to bring this up on his 70s Football site... er... ahem...well no series is above criticism! When the series comes round next year make sure you watch it so that they'll make a third! See BBC - Drama - Life On Mars 22 February Paul Hart (Stockport County) takes an unpaid advisory role at Rushden and Diamonds in League 2 Nicky Summerbee, son of Mike Summerbee, has joined Tamworth in the Conference National League from Bradford City. Nicky has not played for Bradford City this season, but has appeared on loan at both Swindon Town and Tranmere Rovers. At Tamworth he teams up with player-manager, Mark Cooper, son of Terry Cooper. 20 February David Webb (Chelsea) has stepped down from his role as Chief Executive of Yeovil Town due to personal abuse from fans. He bought the club in December 2005. 19 February Mike Ford son of Tony Ford (Bristol Rovers) has left Brackley Town of the Southern League Western Division, where he was player-coach to join Bedford Town of the Southern League Premier Division as a player. 17 February Frank Barlow (Sheffield United) and Ian McParland become joint cartaker managers of Nottingham Forest in League One following the departure of Gary Megson - son of Don Megson (Bristol Rovers). 16 February Next Generation News Gary Megson, son of Don Megson (Bristol Rovers), has left his role as manager at Nottingham Forest. Forest were relegated last season, and the departure follows a run of poor results. 13 February Next Generation News Steffen Iverson, son of Odd Iversen (Racing Mechelen)has left Vålerenga I.F, with whom he won the Norwegian Premiership last season to join Rosenborg B.K. the team he won the title with in 1995 and 1996 prior to coing to England with Wolves. 9 February Ron Greenwood (West Ham manager) dies. See obituary. 7 February Bowyer and Dearden Leave Ian Bowyer (Manchester City) leaves his post as Assistant Manager of MK Dons following the side's poor performance - they are presently bottom of League 1. A fellow Bob 70-71 Player, Billy Dearden (Sheffield United) also loses his coaching post. 5 February

Well it isn't Francis Munro (Wolves), can anyone throw a light on this one????? 2 February Souness Leaves Graeme Souness (Tottenham Hotspur) is sacked by Newcastle United after an indifferent start to the season, which sees them just 6 points above relegation. Newcastle United have won just one point in 6 Premiership matches.. Graeme looked to have turned fortunes at the club when he signed Michael Owen, but has been very unlucky with injuries to him and other key players. Daniel found himself out of contract at the end of last season after playing for Cambridge United, and had moved to Conference South side, Weymouth. Though it was reported he had signed a year's contract, he left Weymouth in December 2005. NB 11 February 2006 Daniel plays his debut in a League match away to Port Vale coming on in the 73rd minute when the score was 1-0 to the Vale, which it is how the game finished. 13 January Sir Bobby Robson has become International Football Consultant to Ireland National Football Team under Steve Staughton. Dave was caretaker manager of Leicester City for a short spell last season. 7 December Harry Returns to Portsmouth Harry Redknapp (West Ham United) returns to manage Portsmouth in the Premiership a year after having left the club for Southampton. Portsmouth are struggling in the Premership much as Southampton were when he took over there. Harry was unable to prevent Southampton's relegation.
