Life On Mars

Anyone who enjoys a bit of 70s fun MUST have enjoyed 'Life On Mars' shown on BBC 1 for the last 8 weeks. Naturally, here at the home of Bob's 70-71Pages, there will be a gloom on Mondays until it returns again in 2007.

I think the show's creators have been listening to my slightly more deranged 'if only' thoughts before coming up with this one. I can almost hear me saying to some poor person unable to run away fast enough, 'If only there was a 70s t.v.cop series, a bit like the Sweeney used to be, based on a David Bowie song and with plenty of 70s football references...ha,ha, and what if one of them keeps thinking he's from the modern day and points out how naff and 70s the others are all the time, hur, hur, it would be fabulous. I know they could set in Leeds...'.

You see it must have been my thoughts they copied, it's just that they set it in Manchester just to get round the copyright, I swear.

Anyway, the series was intelligent, hilarious, exciting and a perfect blend of 70s worship with Naughties sensibilities. It also mentioned in different episodes, Bobby Charlton (not a Sir, then, of course), Francis Lee (Manchester City), George Best, Lou Macari (Celtic), Denis Law, and Mike Summerbee (I think).

In fact, we saw the backs of the heads of two of them in a nightclub - Francis Lee and Bobby Charlton (really, Bobby Charlton at a nightclub did they do no research...?)

One episode completely centred on the Manchester derby, concluding with scenes of the fans walking to the game. And a signed 'cigarette card' of Bobby Charlton was central to the plot of the final episode of the series! Great stuff. Only an incredibly sad and boring 70s football nerd would have noticed it was in fact a bubblegum card, and then gone on to bring this up on his 70s Football site... er... ahem...well no series is above criticism!

When the series comes round next year make sure you watch it so that they'll make a third!

George Best Tribute
(Click to see the CD at
Amazon.co.uk)

For the past 7 weeks, there has been a George Best Tribute CD in the charts, based on songs sung at his funeral. The following is from www.don-mclean.com/articles/georgebest.asp

Best's funeral was the largest Northern Ireland has ever seen. Best's body left the family home at Cregagh Road, East Belfast, shortly after 10 am on Saturday, December 3. The cortege then travelled the short distance to Stormont. The route was lined with around 100,000 mourners. There was an 11 am service in the Grand Hall relayed to around 25,000 mourners inside the grounds of Stormont, and live on BBC One, UTV, RTÉ, ITV News, BBC News 24, Sky News, Sky Sports News, EuroNews and MUTV. Afterwards, Best was buried beside his mother Annie in a private ceremony at the hill-top Roselawn Cemetery, overlooking east Belfast.

At the funeral, local singer Brian Kennedy sang Don McLean's Vincent (Starry Starry Night) as it had been George Best's favourite song. This performance, together with two other songs performed during the service ('You Raise Me Up' by Brian Kennedy and 'The Long and Winding Road' performed by Peter Corry) forms the George Best Tribute single released in December 2005 on the Curb Records label. Profits are being donated to the George Best Foundation to support research into liver disease.

Greetings Bob.

Dropped on your site by accident. Very impressive. (Thanks - Bob) See if you can help me with this one.  I seem to remember a player in the 50's or 60's playing for Wolves called Munroe. I think he played outside left.

The remarkable thing about him was that he only had one eye, that is if my memory serves me correctly. I think he had a glass eye, although I don't remember if he played with it in or out?

Looking forward to your comments on this and keep up the good work. Will keep looking in on your pages.

Best regards,

Gerry Doyle

Well it isn't Francis Munro (Wolves), can anyone throw a light on this one?????

Souness Leaves

Graeme Souness (Tottenham Hotspur) is sacked by Newcastle United after an indifferent start to the season, which sees them just 6 points above relegation. Newcastle United have won just one point in 6 Premiership matches.. Graeme looked to have turned fortunes at the club when he signed Michael Owen, but has been very unlucky with injuries to him and other key players. Glenn Roeder is appointed the caretaker manager, and Alan Shearer becomes the assistant manager.

Could anyone help with a simple question that is driving me up the wall!!!

In the 74 charity shield, Duncan Mackenzie (Nottingham Forest) came on as sub for Leeds - did he come on in a long or short sleeve shirt?

Alan Gilzean

Alan Gilzean at Spurs

How you may ask....well in 1963 Ian signed for Arsenal and in 1964 Gillie signed for Spurs and the great Dundee side that I supported as a boy was broken down the middle!

I am 56 now and still haven't recovered.

As a Leeds United fan who saw the team scattered all over the World in two seasons just recently, I know how you feel.. I have added Alan's England League career details to the site...just to rub salt in the wounds, really...!

Let's Go Doolally!

Doolally Edited by David Gill

Doolally Edited by David Gill

Thanks once again to Graeme Garvey for telling me about the latest book from PDG Books. Here's what the book says about itself...

Doolally with a foreword by Ardal O'Hanlon is an anthology of fiction, non-fictiojn and poetry about the crazy rollercoster of emotions involved in following football.

Being a supporter of a football club involves 'madness' in all sorts of ways - obsessin, lunacy, martyrdom, bemusement, embarrassment, manical amusement, excruciating anger, transcendent joyand so on. Central to this book will be an exploration of these feelings about Leeds United, a football club which has given its supporters plenty of reasons to 'go mad' in recent years.

Paperback £8-95. PDG Books

In Trouble...Again!

www.footballmonthlyarchives.co.uk have been in touch requesting the removal of their images that appear on this site. So expect a few gaps to appear. On the up side, the site is well worth a visit, as they provide a full electronic version of Charles Buchan's Football Monthly. In their own words...

The archives provide an invaluable resource of authentic research for:

  • Film production,
  • Newspaper articles
  • Book research
  • One-off magazines for commercial promotions
  • Website content.

Above all, it doesn't look too pricey, though they are naturally a bit touchy about things appearing for free...
