Terry Paine at Southampton c.1971 An unusual hero for me as a Leeds fan has always been Terry Paine. Following his career was one of the earliest sparks that has so far led to inflicting cyberspace with my fascination for League Appearances. In my formative years, unbeknown to the wider population, Terry was encroaching on (the now late) Jimmy Dickinson's record of 764 English League appearances - all of which he played at Portsmouth. Terry moved from Southampton desparately close to the record whilst at one club, but then went on for a whole new lease of life at the new boys to the League, Hereford United.Eventually Terry cruised past Jimmy's total and reached 824 League games. One of the lesser known benefits of not been at war is that appearance records are beatable (Sir Stanley Matthews would undoubtably have headed the list, but for World War II)... it's worth signing a peace treaty for. Consequently, the record now belongs to another ex-Southampton player, Peter Shilton. Only Tony Ford has overhauled Terry's total as an outfield player. See 700+ Club.Terry was also an England international, who was in the England 1966 World Cup Squad, he played in the Finals game against Mexico - a 2-0 victory, but he lost his place ultimately to the young (future Southampton player) Alan Ball (Everton), and was never capped again.Terry lost his most League goals record for Southampton to Mick Channon, Peter Shilton now holds Terry's old most capped Southamton player record ... but he still holds on to Southampton's most League appearences record of 713, which is the 4th all time highest League appearences for one club.
