May 2001'When Liverpool Ruled the World' BBC 1 15 May, 2001 Bob Rating: BBB I watch a number of football programmes, but by the time I find time to review them, I can't remember them any more. So it is with great pleasure .... Let's not get things out of perspective, here, I'm a Leeds fan first, an English football fan second, and football nostalgia fan third, but this programme was fantastic. For an old geezer like me, there was an inevitable sadness about watching the rise of Liverpool and remembering how English teams once ruled Europe - right up to the Hysel ban. From 1968 to1985 an English team won a cup in Europe every year except three - and were finalists in two of those. Since the ban was lifted there has been only 4 wins including last Wednesday's . Boo hoo. So I watched this tribute to Liverpool in Europe as a fan of English football and it was fabulous fun. It began with the very early Shankly days showing footage of their flukey '65 FA Cup win against Leeds, and followed the club's rise through to the Keegan / Toshack era, on to Dalglish's dominance and through each of the 4 European Cup victories. There were interviews with such Bob 70-71 page stars as Ron Yeats, Ian St John, Tommy Smith (all Liverpool), Phil Neal (Northampton), and Next Generation star, Kelly Dalglish (Sons and Daughters: Daughters). The format was documentary style with contemporary footage, supported by present day interviews with the stars of the day. There was even a shot of a six year old Kelly as if to prove she was a presenter in the making ! The main theme was that of the Liverpool not only rising to the top, but staying there. It was a dynasty. Shankly's shock departure and Keegan's unexpected transfer to SV Hambug, were overcome without a glitch. The old stars rattled out their after-dinner speach stories one more time, and we were constantly reminded how great scouser fans are - and always have been (yeah -yeah). The funniest moment for me was Alan Kennedy - Keith's brother (Newcastle United) - describing his penalty goal celebration. It was 0-0 at full time, he agreed to take a penalty knowing he was useless at them. His goal was the European Cup winner, he turned and ran intending to do a Robbie Keane somersault but his team mates were running towards him so all he could manage was a pathetic bunny hop. The embarrassment has endured the years. And then it all ended with the Hysel disaster. With it came England's five year ban. The documentary ends, the adverts for Liverpool 's UEFA Cup final the next day faded in. I watched the match shouting the side on to European victory just as I did during the Eighties. What great programming. What a great programme. 'Four Four Two', June 2001, No.82. See 'FourFourTwo' Bob Rating: BB
'Leeds Leeds Leeds', May 2001 leedsu@comag.co.uk Bob Rating: BBBo Top edition, this with a Jack Charlton (Leeds United) interview leading the way. It's part two of the interview begun with last month's edition, and entitled, "I'm still wearing Billy (Bremner)'s vest !" Following this the picture caption competition shows Jack on the Elland Road pitch in a sofa with a clock... Fans views in the 'Magic Moments' and 'Paint it White' features have a good Seventies slant, too. Indeed Neil Potentier of Hucknall, Nottingham, even recalls an incident from the '71 season.
'Ask Eddie' has it's usual quota of 70-71 players, most interestingly clearing up the query that Mick Jones (Leeds United) dislocated his elbow, not his shoulder, at the 1972 Cup Final ! This is illustrated with a picture of Mick screaming with pain on the day itself. Actually the picture is more interesting for including the helping hand of defeated goalie, Geoff Barnet (Arsenal squad)- what a player. This feature also has a picture of Don Revie relating the story of the gypsy curse at Elland Road. It seems that the land was cursed by gypsies when they were refused entry in the days before the ground was actually built. In 1971 Don got a gypsy to lift the curse, and Leeds promptly lost the Championship that May having led it all season. Oh well. On top of that there is also a feature and an advert about Billy Bremner's shirt available from 'Philosophy Football'. 'Billy's Brag' says the advert, is a 70's Leeds United shirt with the quote by Billy, 'Side Before Self Every Time'. Good quote, good shirt. This shirt event is available for 16-99 (pounds sterling) plus 1-95 p&p if you call 01256 464894. Tell them I sent you !!! Thanks in part to the Jackie articles, the Billy Bremner count was fabulous this month. Four pictures, plus another two in adverts (at least). Then there was the Billy quote dominating two pages, and a minimum 4 further independent written references ! For further May news ...
