FKS 1970-71 - Southampton

Let's be honest now, the only decent things Southampton ever did was a) beat Manchester United in the 1976 F.A.Cup Final, and b) lose gloriously 7-0 to Leeds United in 1972 in one of the most famous footballing displays on 'Match of the Day' ever (yes, I'm a Leeds fan) .

Southampton fans may want to point out their Division One runners-up position in 1983-84, but we all know them as the team that used to forever miss relegation season after season along with Coventry City. Thgough now both have succomed and are to be found in the Championship.

I have a personal soft spot for them as the team Ian Scorgie supports, Ian being the former landlord of the Red Lion in Hurley, where I first discovered beer (or more specifically Breakspeare's Special ).

The team is unusual for containing two players who have played over 700 League games in Terry Paine and Mick Channon. (Click 700+Club for more information.) Terry Paine even headed the list for while until he was overtaken by future Southampton goalie, Peter Shilton.
