July 1 John Manning, the Bolton W. striker, joins Walsall . . . Swansea C. are fined 200 pounds following crowd misbehaviour . . . In a friendly international, West Germany beat Denmark 3-1.

2 Tommy Docherty appointed as assistant manager of Hull C. . . . Leeds U. arrange to play their match against Tottenham H. on August 25 at the Hull ground. . . Nils Liedholm is the new manager of Fiorentina.

7 Both Arsenal and Celtic draw easy opponents in the European Cup. In the Cup Winners Cup, the holders, Chelsea, are paired with a village team from Luxembourg - Jeunesse Hautcharage, Ronnie Bird (CardiffC.) joins Crewe Alex. , Steve Melledew (Everton) signs for Aldershot, and Eddie Rowles (Bournemouth) joins York C.

8 Ken Jones moves from Southampton to Cardiff C. . . . Don Howe is appointed as the new manager of W .B.A. Arsenal manager Bertie Mee says: 'There is no need for me to repeat how highly I rate Don as a coach, and how sorry I am to see him leaving Highbury' . . . Stephen Kovacs is the new Ajax boss.

11 Arsenal Chairman, Denis Hill-Wood, attacks Howe for taking with him two other members of the clubs' 'backstage' staff (Wright and Whitehouse). 'Loyalty is a dirty word these days, I suppose. It all just staggers me. There is nothing I can do about what West Bromwich have done in raiding our staff, except just to ignore them.'

12 George Petchey is appointed as the new manager of Orient, and Arsenal appoint Steve Burtenshaw as their new chief coach. Ujpest Dozsa are the champions of Hungary, for the third year running.

14 Preston N.E. pay 25,000 pounds for Middlesbrough's Hugh McIlmoyle, and Ipswich T. buy Bryan Hamilton from Linfield for 30,000 pounds. Hamilton was the Ulster Player of the Year.

16 1974 World Cup draw. England are grouped with Wales and Poland, and Scotland are in the same section as Czechoslovakia and Denmark. . . Manchester U.'s ground at Old Trafford is closed for two weeks, following a knife-throwing incident in a match against Newcastle U. in February.

18 Pele plays his last match for Brazil. A crowd of 200,000 see the home team draw with Yugoslavia in the Maracana Stadium in Rio. . . Enrique Sivori takes over as Estudiantes manager . 22 Jon Sammels (Arsenal) joins Ipswich T. for 100,000 pounds . . . European Cup winners Ajax refuse to take part in the World Club Championship, due to ugly scenes of several matches played in the past. Nacional (Uruguay) ask the U.E.F.A. to put pressure on the Dutch club.

25 Chelsea, on tour, beat Halmstad, the Swedish Second Division side, 6-0, Tommy Baldwin scoring a hat-trick . . . Boniperti is elected as the President of Juventus.

26 Bobby Brown is dismissed by the Scottish F.A. after four years of managing the national team. 31 It is decided that in the forthcoming Watney Cup, the off-side rule will apply only within the penalty area.
