1 Chelsea with Chris Garland from Bristol C. for 100,000 pounds, gain their first home win of the season, beating W.B.A. 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. . . Leeds U. beat Newcastle U. 5-1 at 'Hillsborough' . . . Nigel Edwards (Chester) sent off in a 0-0 draw at Aldershot . . . Another 16 players booked in League matches. . . Lew Chatterley (Aston Villa) joins Northampton T. on loan. . . Tottenham H. beat Torino 1-0 in Turin in the first leg of the Anglo-ltalian League Cup Winners Cup Final, Martin Chivers scoring the goal.

3 Aston Villa given a 3,000 pounds fine 'suspended sentence' until the end of the 1972-73 season, at an F.A. Disciplinary Committee meeting.

4 Fifty more players booked - total for season now 292 . . . Arsenal beat W.B.A. 1-0 at the Hawthorns. Sheffield U. still at the top of the First Division with a 3-2 win at Nottingham F. Birmingham C. beat Charlton Ath. 4-1 at St. Andrews, with three goals from striker Bob Latchford. Notts. Co. still at the top of the Third Division, winning at Walsall 2-1, both goals coming from Tony Hateley. Bristol R. hit 7 at home to Bradford C., Brian Godfrey scoring a hat-trick . . . Frank Brogan returns from Scotland, and rejoins Ipswich T .

5 The Professional Footballers' Association held a seven-hour management committee meeting in Manchester - demanded an 'immediate and urgent' meeting with soccers' bosses. Chairman Derek Dougan said: 'The livelihood of our members has been put in jeopardy. We appreciate that something needed to be done to improve the game - but we are upset and astonished that they did not consult us. We are getting away from commonsense and instead finding chaos and confusion. It is imperative that we get around a table and talk - and we must do it as soon as possible' . . . In the European Championship Austria beat Sweden 1-0.

6 Bert Head holds a four-hour meeting with his C. Palace players, and accuses some of not trying - Head adds three reserves to his first-team squad for the League Cup-tie with Luton T. . . . First Division players out with injuries include Jeff Astle (appendix) and Bobby Moncur (leg injury) . . . U.E.F.A. announced that the European Cup Final will be played in Rotterdam on May 31.

7 Huddersfield T. place Northern Ireland international Jimmy Nicholson on the transfer list, and sign Bury's centre-half David Lyon, 19, for 15,000 pounds. . . Bradford C. dismiss Jimmy Wheeler as manager, and appoint ex-England international Ray Wilson in a caretaker capacity. . . Football League Cup second round shocks Charlton Ath. 3 - Leicester C. 1, Coventry C. 0 - Burnley 1, and Huddersfield T. 0 Bolton W. 2. . . Kevin Hegarty transferred from Hearts to Carlisle U. . . . Brian Phillips, the former Mansfield T. player banned from the game for life after the 1963 bribery affair was freed under the new rule enabling banned players to appeal after seven years. . . Notts. Co. sign Willie Carlin from Leicester C. for 25,000 pounds. . . F.I.F.A. decides not to get involved with women's soccer.

8 Roger Cross joins Fulham from Brentford . . . Vic Halom (Fulham) placed on the transfer list. . . West Germany beat Mexico 5-0 in a friendly international. . . In the second round of the League Cup, Tottenham H. (holders) win 1-0 at W.B.A., and West Ham U. are held to a 1-1 draw at Upton Park by Cardiff C.

9 Ferenc Puskas presents the Rothmans Golden Boots winners with their awards at a luncheon held in London. . . Halom leaves Fulham and signs for Luton T. Ipswich T. sign Allan Hunter from Blackburn R. for 60,000 pounds plus Bobby Bell. Blackburn R. sign Terry Garbett from Watford . . . Malcolm Allison is quoted as saying that he would like to manage the Scottish national side on a part-time basis for the 1974 World Cup.

10 Tommy Carroll walks out on his club, Ipswich T., and returns home to Dublin. . . Bertie Lutton Wolverhampton W. joins Brighton on a loan transfer. . . Bertie Vogts is voted the Footballer of the Year in West Germany.

11 Arsenal beat Leeds U. 2-0 at Highbury, but Sheffield U., who draw 2-2 at home to Tottenham H., still lead the First Division. Other Division leaders: Bristol C., Notts. Co. and Grimsby T. Leicester gain their first away win of the season - 2-1at Ipswich T. Ted MacDougall scores a hat-trick in Bournemouth's 4-1 home win over Rochdale.

12 Tommy Docherty appointed as Scottish team manager on a trial basis - in charge for the next two internationals, both European Championship games.

13 George Best, at a personal hearing, is cleared by an F.A. Disciplinary Committee in London, after being sent off against Chelsea.

14 Tottenham H. open Britain's assault on European trophies with a 6-1 away win over Keflavik (Iceland) in the new U.E.F.A. Cup, Alan Gilzean scoring a hat-trick.

15 Bobby Gould transferred from Wolverhampton W. to W.B.A. for 60,000 pounds. . . The Football League announce a 14-strong squad to play the League of Ireland in Dublin on September 22. An active night in European competitions; In the European Cup Arsenal win 3-1 in Norway against Stromgodset, but Celtic lose 2-1 away to BK 1903 Copenhagen. Ajax start their defence of the trophy with a 2-0 win over Dynamo Dresden. Peter Osgood scores a hat-trick for Chelsea, who crush Jeunesse Hautcharage 8-0 in Luxembourg in the Cup Winners Cup. Liverpool are beaten 2-1 by Servette in Switzerland, and Cardiff C. draw 1-1 with Dynamo (East Berlin) in Germany, conceding the equaliser in the last minute. In the U.E.F.A. Cup Leeds U. win 2-0 away to Lierse (Belgium), Southampton beat Atletico Bilbao 2-1 at the Dell, and Wolverhampton W. beat Academica, Portugal 3-0 at Molineux.

16 Derby Co. sign Roger Davies from Southern League Worcester C. for 10,000 pounds. Other transfers - John Fairbrother (Northampton T.) to Mansfield T., and Len Kinsella (Carlisle U. ) to Rochdale.

17 Millwall sign South African striker Derek Smethurst from Chelsea for 33,000 pounds. . . Southend U. beat Grimsby T. 3-1, Billy Best scoring a hat-trick.

18 Sheffield U. keep their place at the top of the First Division with a 1-0 win at Leicester C.,Alan Woodward scoring the only goal of the game direct from a corner in the last minute of the match. George Best scores a hat-trick in Manchester U.'s 4-2 win over West Ham U.

21 Leicester C. sign Alan Birchenall from C. Palace for 100,000 pounds. C. Palace sign Bobby Kellard from Leicester C. for 50,000 pounds and John Craven from Blackpool for 40,000 pounds.

22 Chelsea sign Steve Kember from C. Palace for 150,000 pounds. C. Palace agreed terms with Airdrieonians for Sammy Goodwin . . . The Football League beat the League of Ireland 2-1 . . . In the European Championship Russia beat Northern Ireland 1-0, and in the League Cup replay West Ham U. won 2-1 at Cardiff, Geoff Hurst scoring two late goals. In the second leg of the Anglo-Italian League Cup Winners Cup Final, Tottenham H. beat Torino 2-0 with goals by Chivers and Gilzean, and win 3-0 on aggregate. In the match played for permanent possession of the old Fairs Cup, Barcelona beat Leeds U. 2-1 in Barcelona.

23 C. Palace sign Bobby Bell from Blackburn R. for 55,000 pounds. John Price (Stockport) transferred to Blackburn R.

25 Sheffield U. still at the top of the First Division with a three point lead, after a 1-0 home win over Chelsea. C. Palace, with three new players in the side, beat Everton 2-1 at Selhurst Park. Richie Barker (Notts. Co.) transferred to Peterborough U.

27 C. Palace complete the signing of Sammy Goodwin from Airdrieonians for œ40,000. 28 Tottenham H. beat Keflavik (Iceland) 9-0 at White Hart Lane in the second leg of their U.E.F.A. Cup tie, to win 15-1 on aggregate. Martin Chivers nets a hat-trick for Spurs. Rangers beat Rennes (France) 1-0 at Ibrox to win 2-1 on aggregate. Norwich C. opened a three-point lead at the top of Division 2, beating Preston N .E. 2-0 at Deepdale. Arthur Bellamy scored a hat-trick in Burnley's 6-1 thumping of Orient, and other hat-trick men included Bob Latchford for Birmingham C. against Watford (4-1), Bobby Owen for Carlisle U. against Charlton Ath. (5-2) and Carl Gilbert who scored all four of Rotherham U.'s goals in their 4-0 defeat of Swansea C. . . . Blackburn R. signed Ben Arentoft from Newcastle U. for 25,000 pounds, and Doncaster R. signed Graham Moore from Charlton Ath. Fulham placed both Jimmy Dunne and Stan Home on the transfer list.

29 Chelsea beat Jeunesse Hautcharage 13-0 in their return Cup Winners Cup match at Stamford Bridge, winning the tie 21-0 on aggregate, to set up a new record score for European competitive club matches. Peter Osgood scores five times and Tommy Baldwin also hits a hat-trick. Osgood's goals, eight in the tie, equalled the individual scoring record. Arsenal beat Stromgodset 4-0 at Highbury to win 7-1 on aggregate, and Celtic also make further progress in the European Cup, beating BK 1903 3-0 at Parkhead to win 4-2. Cardiff C. draw I-I at Ninian Park with Dynamo in the Cup Winners Cup, to make the aggregate score, 2-2, but lose 5-4 on penalties. Liverpool beat Servette 2-0 at Anfield, to win their tie 3-2. In the U.E.F.A. Cup Derek Dougan hits a hat-trick for Wolverhampton W. who win 4-1 away to Academica, and take the tie 7-1. In other ties Aberdeen win 1-0 against Celta Vigo (3-0 aggregate) and St. Johnstone win 3-0 at home to S.V. Hamburg (4-2 aggregate). But two English clubs crash, Leeds U. going down sensationally 4-0 at Elland Road against Lierse (Belgium) to lose 4-2, and Southampton being beaten 2-0 by Bilbao in Spain (aggregate score 2-3) . . . The vital Third Division clash between Notts. Co. and Bournemouth ends all square at 1-1.

30 Keith Weller moves from Chelsea to Leicester C. for 100,000 pounds, and Derby Co. pay 20,000 pounds for Blackburn R.'s 17-year-old goalkeeper Graham Moseley. Other goalkeepers on the move include Tranmere R.'s Frank Lane, who joins Liverpool for 30,000 pounds, and Tommy Lawrence, who goes in the opposite direction on a loan basis. . . Ten players appealed to an independent tribunal over the terms of their contracts offered this season - John Dempsey and Stewart Houston (Chelsea), Colin Viljoen and Ian Collard (lpswich T.), Eric McMordie (Middlesbrough), Les Wilson (Wolverhampton W.), Ray Treacy (Charlton Ath.), Ray Evans (Tottenham H.), Norman Corner and Bruce Bannister (Bradford C.).
