2 Manchester U. beat Sheffield U. 2-0 at Old Trafford. Sheffield's first defeat of the season, and the win enabJes Manchester U. to close the gap at the top of the First Division to a single point. In Division Two, Norwich C. draw 0-0 at home to Q.P .R., while Mi1lwa1l move into third place with a 2-1 home win over Carlisle U. John O'Mara scores another hat-trick for Brentford, who beat Northampton T. 6-1, while Alf Wood scores five of Shrewsbury T.'s goals in their 7-1 home win over Blackburn R.

4 Orient sign Phil Hoadley from C. Palace for 30,000 pounds. . . Tommy Docherty announces his Scottish squad for the European Championship match against Portugal at Hampden Park on October 13. It includes ArsenaJ goaJkeeper Bob Wilson, who was born in Chesterfield but has Scottish parents, his teammate George Graham, and Sheffield U.'s skipper Eddie Colquhoun . . . Tottenham H.are fined œ200 by an F. A. Disciplinary Committee, after the stapJe-firing incident at their ground during the match with Newcastle U. on August 18.

5 In the third round of the League Cup, Bolton W., at home to Manchester C., produce the shock result of the night, winning 3-0 with a hat-trick from 20-year-old Garry Jones. Aston Villa, after being 2-0 down, fight back to draw 2-2 at C. Palace, and Sheffield U., at home to York C., struggle through 3-2, Alan Woodward scoring the winning goal two minutes from time. Liverpool beat Southampton 1-0 at Anfield with a goal from Steve Heighway.

6 Tottenham H., the holders, have a comfortable 4-1 win at Torquay U. in the League Cup, and Arsenal easily beat Newcastle U. 4-0 at Highbury. In other ties Chelsea draw at Nottingham F. (1-1), Stoke C. draw at Oxford (1-1), Leeds U. draw at West Ham (0-0), and Manchester U. are held 1-1 by Burnley at Old Trafford.Norwich C. pay 40,000 pounds for Rochdale striker David Cross, and win their League Cup tie with Carlisle U. 4-1 at Carrow Road.

7 David Lennard joins Blackpool from Halifax T.

9 Sheffield U. lose at home for the first time, 3-2 to Stoke C., and Manchester U., with a 3-0 win at Huddersfield, take over as League leaders. In battle at the bottom of the Division, W.B.A. win 2-0 at C. Palace with goals from Tony Brown and Bobby Gould. Giacinto Facchetti plays his 6Oth game for Italy - an all-time record.Italy beat Sweden 3-0, and qualify for the quarter-finals.

10 Q.P.R. sign Terry Mancini from Orient for 30,000 pounds.

11 League Cup replays, - Chelsea beat Nottingham F. 2-1, and Preston N.E. beat Watford 2-1.

12 Bolton W. sign Gareth Williams from Bury.

13 England win their European Championship tie in Bas1e against Switzerland 3-2. Geoff Hurst, Martin Chivers and Weibel (og) score for England, and Switzerland reply through Jeandupeux and Kunzli. Scotland, under Tommy Docherty, beat Portugal 2-1, John O'Hare and Archie Gemmill score for Scotland, Northern Ireland draw 1-1 with Russia and Wales beat Finland 3-0. . . Ina League Cup replay, Aston Villa beat C. Palace 2-0.

16 Manchester U. beat Derby Co. 1-0 at Old Trafford via George Best to stay at the top of the table. Derby were the last unbeaten side in the First Division. In the Second Division Norwich C. beat Luton T. 3-1 at Carrow Road, and Millwall win 3-1 against Bristol C. at the Den. . . Q.P.R. sign striker John O'Rourke from Coventry C. for 70,000 pounds.

18 At an F.A. Disciplinary Committee meeting, Aston Villa's Bruce Rioch is suspended for four weeks.

19 C. Palace sign John Hughes and Willie Wallace from Celtic for a combined fee of 50,000 pounds . . . Millwall suffer their first league defeat, losing 1-0 at Middlesbrough, to an 88th minute goal by John Hickton.

21 Bobby Ham joins Rotherham U. from Preston N.E., and Everton pay Falkirk 70,000 pounds for full back John McLaughlin.

23 Manchester U. win 1-0 at Newcastle with a Gorge Best goal, to extend their lead at the top of the First Division. Derby Co. beat Arsena12-1 at the Baseball Ground. In the vital match in Division Two, Norwich C. suffer their first league defeat, losing 2-1 at Millwall.

20 Moenchengladbach beat Inter 7-1 in a European Cup tie in Germany. Inter centreforward Roberto Boninsegna is carried off after being hit on the head by a beer can thrown by the crowd. The Italians claim the match. In other ties, Arsenal win away to Grasshoppers (Zurich) and Ujpest Dozsa beat Valencia 1-0 in Spain.

25 Derek Dougan, Chairman of the P.F.A., successfully appeals against a booking received against C. Palace. The booking would be recorded, but would not count against him.

26 In the League Cup B1ackpool beat Aston Villa 4-1, but the other three ties are drawn, Arsenal v Sheffield U. (0-0), Q.P.R. v Bristol R. (1-1), and Grimsby T. v Norwich C. (1-1). The U.E.F.A.cancel the 7-1 Moenchengladbach result, and another match is arranged in West Berlin. The Greek team Panionios is thrown out of the U.E.F.A. Cup, because of their players behaviour in a game against Ferencvaros.

27 West Ham U. beat Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup, but the other three ties are drawn, making a total of six replays necessary. Manchester U. draw 1-1 at Old Trafford with Stoke C., but both Tottenham H. and Chelsea are held by lower opponents, Preston N.E. drawing 1-1 at White Hart Lane, and Bolton W. drawing 1-1 at Stamford Bridge. In the European Championship Russia draw 0-0 with Spain in Seville and reach the last eight, while Wales lose 1-0 in Czechoslovakia. . . Fulham sign Alan Stephenson on a two month loan from West Ham U., and Birmingham C. pay Carlisle U. 80,000 pounds for Bob Hatton. Barry Endean (Charlton Ath.) and Eamon Rogers (Blackbum R.) are involved in a swop deal between the two clubs. . . Juventus beat Aberdeen 2-0 in a U.E.F.A. Cup tie.

28 Blackpool's Scottish international Tony Green signs for Newcastle U. for 140,000 pounds.

29 Bournemouth maintain their pressure at the top of the Third Division, beating Mansfield T. 5-0 away, Ted MacDougall scoring a hat-trick.

30 Manchester U. lose their unbeaten record at Old Trafford, going down 1-0 to Leeds U. Derby Co. maintain their challenge with a 2-0 win at Nottingham F.
