1. Death threats to George Best force Manchester U. to withdraw him from the Northern Ireland squad to play Spain in Belfast on November 10.

2 Sir Alf Ramsey picks England's 23-strong squad for their European Championship match with Switzerland. It includes Rodney Marsh (Q.P.R.) In a U.E.F.A. Cup tie, Tottenham H. beat Nantes (France) 1-0 at White Hart Lane with a goal from Martin Peters, and win the tie by the same score. Bristol R. beat Q.P.R. 1-0 in their replayed League Cup tie.

3 Chelsea, the European Cup Winners Cup holders, are knocked out of the tournament when they are held to a I-I draw by the Swedish team Atvidaberg at Stamford Bridge. With the aggregate score I-I, Chelsea lose on the away goals ruling. Liverpool are beaten in the same competition, losing 3-1 to Bayern Munich. In the European Cup, Arsenal beat Grasshoppers 3-0 at Highbury, and in the U.E.F.A. Cup St. Johnstone lose 1-0 away to Vasas, Budapest, but win 2-1 on aggregate, and Wolverhampton W. beat A.D.O. The Hague 4-0 at Molineux, with a goal by Derek Dougan and three own goals. Rea] Madrid are eliminated from the competition. Inter beat Moenchengladbach 4-2 in Italy in the European Cup. . . Asa Hartford is transferred from W.B.A. to Leeds U. for œ170,000.

4 Hughie Reed moves from W.B.A. to Plymouth Arg. for 10,000 pounds. Other transfers, Mike Bickle from Plymouth Arg. to Gillingham for 7,000 pounds, Rod Belfitt from Leeds U. to Ipswich T. for 40,000 pounds, and Frank Brogan moves from Ipswich T. to Halifax T. - his third move of the season!

6 The Asa Hartford transfer deal is called off, when a suspected hole in-the-heart condition is found during the Leeds medieal examination. . . In the big First Division game, Manchester C. and Manchester U. draw 3-3 at Maine Road. Derby Co. beat C. Palace 3-0 at home, to stay in second place. Norwich C., with a 2-1 win at Hull, maintain their ]ead in the Second Division, with Millwall, 3-2 winners over Watford, in second place. In the Third Division, Bournemouth and Notts. Co. who both win, move 5 and 4 points clear of the rest of the field. . . In Uruguay, footballers go on strike for more pay.

8 After examinations by specialists, Asa Hartford is given the all-clear to re-start training with W.B.A. . . . In League Cup replays, Chelsea win 6-0 at Bolton, Tommy Baldwin scoring a hat-triek, Tottenham H. win 2-1 at Preston after extra time, and Sheffield U. beat Arsenal 2-0. Stoke C. and Manchester U. still deadloeked at 0-0 after extra time.

10 Tommy Lawrenee, on a loan transfer, is finally signed by Tranmere R., and Frank Wignall joins Mansfield T. from Derby Co. . . . At Wembley, England can only draw 1-1 with Switzerland, Mike Summerbee scoring for them. . . Referee Van Ravens is suspended because of his blunder in ordering penalty kicks to be taken at Lisbon, when Rangers eliminated Sporting Lisbon in the Cup Winners Cup on the away goals rule.

13 Manchester U. stay top of the First Division, beating Tottenham H. 3-1 at Old Trafford.

14 The first Qualifying match for the 1974 World Cup - Malta 0, Hungary 2.

15 In their League Cup second replay, Stoke C. eventually beat Manchester U. 2-1 at the Victoria Ground.

17 The League Cup quarter-finals: Tottenham H. have a comfortable 2-0 home win over Blackpool, and Chelsea gain an excellent 1-0 victory at Norwich, the Second Division leaders, with a goal by Peter Osgood. At Upton Park West Ham u. run riot, beating Sheffield United 5-0, with a hat-trick from Bryan Robson . . . Brito (Brazil), a member of the World Cup winning team, is suspended for one year after striking a referee. In the European championship West Germany qualify for the last eight with a 0-0 draw against Poland, and Holland, with a hat-trick from Johann Cruyff, register the highest score of the tournament, beating Luxembourg 8-0. . . Aberdeen go out of the U.E.F.A. Cup. . . Watford sign Everton's reserve goalkeeper, Andy Rankin, for 15,000 pounds.

20 Manchester U., with a 3-2 home win over Leicester C., still lead the First Division. Denis Law scores twice for United. Derby Co., in second place, win 3-0 at home to Sheffield U., and Manchester C. win 2-0 at West Ham. Arsenal, after being 1-0 up at half-time, crash 5-1 at Wolverhampton W., and Everton thrash Southampton 8-0 at Goodison Park, Joe Royle scoring four times, and David Johnson collecting a hat-trick. In the F.A. Cup, Ted MacDougal1 sets a new scoring record with nine goals in Bournemouth's 11-0 home win over Southern Leaguers Margate. Brighton beat Hi!lingdon 7-1, while Colchester U., last years' shock winners over Leeds U., are beaten 4-1 at home by Shrewsbury T. Aston Vi!la lose 1-0 at Southend, while non-league clubs to progress included Wigan Ath., who beat Halifax T. 2-1 at wigan, and amateurs Blyth Spartans, who win 1-0 at Crewe.

21 Dynamo Kiev win the Russian title, and qualify for the 1972-73 European Cup! . . .

22 Steve Kember (Chelsea) replaces his club-mate Alan Hudson, and Bobby Parker (Coventry C.) replaces Derek Jeffries (Manchester C.) in England's Under 23 side to play Switzerland. . . In F. A. Cup replays, Port Vale beat Blackburn R. 3-1. Peterborough U. beat Redditch 6-0, Mansfield T. beat Chester 4-3, and Swansea C. win 3-2 at Brentford. In a fourth qualifying round fifth replay, Alvechurch beat Oxford C. 1-0 at Vi!la Park. The two teams had played a total of eleven hours, a new record.

23 In the League Cup, Stoke C. qualified for the semi-finals with a 4-2 away win over Bristol R. . . . Rotherham beat Frickley Colliery 4-0 in an F. A. Cup replay.

24 Bertie Mee drops Charlie George and Sammy Nelson from the Arsenal team to play Tottenham H. at White Hart Lane. Result: a 1-1 draw. . . England's Under 23 international against Switzerland also ends 1-1 . . . Wolverhampton W. produce a good result in the U.E.F.A. Cup, winning 1-0 in East Germany against Carl Zeiss Jena with a goal from John Richards. Other results in the same competition: St. Johnstone 1, ZeljeznicarO; A. C. Milan 3, Dundee O . . . In the European Championship, Rumania beat Wales 2-0 in Bucharest, and qualify for the quarter finals. . . Aldershot beat Alvechurch 4-2 in the First Round of the F. A. Cup, Derby Co. beat Newcastle U. 1-0 at home in the first leg of the Texaco Cup semi-final, and Airdrieonians won 3-0 at Ba!lymena in the other tie.

25 Two of W.B.A.'s players are transferred: goalkeeper Jimmy Cumbes joins Aston Villa for 35,000 pounds, and half-back John Kaye goes to Hull C. for 25,000 pounds . . . Jozsef Zakarias, a member of the Hungarian wonder team of the fifties, dies at the age of 47.

27 George Best scores a hat-trick for Manchester U. who maintain their lead at the top of the First Division with a 5-2 win at Southampton. Manchester C. are still in second position. At the top of Division Two, Norwich C. win 2-0 at home to Middlesbrough, but Millwall drop a point in a 0-0 draw at Hull.

28 Milan beat Inter 3-2 in the Italian local derby.

29 South Shields gain a 3-2 win at Scunthorpe in an F.A. Cup replay, to earn a home Second round tie with Notts. Co.
