JANUARY

ALF RAMSEY, team manager of England, knighted in the New Year's honours list.

Manchester United led the First Division, three points ahead of Liverpool. Blackpool and Newcastle were bottom. Wolves and Coventry were at the top of Division Two while QPR and Stockport headed Divisions Three and Four respectively.

Chris Crowe joined Bristol City from Nottingham Forest and John Osborne left Chesterfield for WBA. George Armstrong asked Arsenal for a transfer.
Sheffield Wednesday, with Ron Springett in goal, met QPR, with his brother Peter as their custodian, in the FA Cup. Wednesday won.
Newcastle forward Albert Bennett was rejected by Charlton after failing a medical test.

Millwall's run of unbeaten home matches was broken by Plymouth.

Willie Anderson left Manchester United for Aston Villa.

Bristol Rovers goalkeeper Bernard Hall regained consciousness after a 16-day coma. He was carried off after injury on New Year's Eve.

Burnley beat Napoli 3-0, Leeds drew 1-1 with Valencia. QPR made a bid to take over Brentford.

Portsmouth received Ray Pointer plus 20,000 pounds from Coventry in exchange for Brian Lewis.

West Ham lost 4-0 at WBA in the first leg of the League Cup semi-final and were ko'd from the FA Cup by Swindon.

QPR hammered Birmingham 4-1 at St. Andrews in the first leg of their FLC semi-final.

Maurice Setters was suspended for 14 days.

The Football League examined the books of Peterborough United.

Berwick beat Rangers 1-0 in the Scottish Cup.


FEBRUARY

MANCHESTER UNITED, with a game in hand, trailed Liverpool by one point. Coventry and Wolves still led Division Two, Cardiff and Northampton were bottom.

Tottenham beat Millwall 1-0 in an FA Cup replay at White Hart Lane.

Billy Bremner was suspended for 14 days and fined 1,000 pounds.

Bobby Brown was appointed full-time manager of Scotland.

QPR beat Birmingham 3-1 and West Ham drew 2-2 with WBA in the second legs of the FLC semi-finals. Leeds won 2-0 in Valencia, Napoli and Burnley drew 0-0.

Jack Marshall resigned as manager of Blackburn Rovers and Eddie Quigley took over.
Chelsea dropped Tony Hateley for the second time.

Terry Venables and Fred Callaghan were sent off at Tottenham. Chelsea players were in dispute with the club over allocation of Cup tickets.

Stoke bid for West Ham's Johnny Byrne but he rejoined Crystal Palace.

Blackpool sacked manager Ron Suart and appointed Stan Mortensen, their former international centre-forward, to take charge.

The BBC made a 1 million pounds bid for the exclusive right to screen soccer matches in England.

Soccer shock of the month: Manchester United lost at home to Norwich in the FA Cup.

Liverpool signed Davie Wilson from Preston at a League reduced fee of 20,000 pounds.

John Radford scored a hat-trick ir five minutes for Arsenal against Bolton.

Bobby Collins joined Bury.

Tommy Docherty "severely reprimanded" by Chelsea.

Ian Ure broke his jaw after colliding with team-mate Terry Neill.

Liverpool paid record fee of 65,000 pounds to Blackpool for Emlyn Hughes.

Tony Allden struck and killed by lightning while playing for High gate against Enfield in an Amateur Cup tie.

Jack Burkitt resigned as manager of Notts County.


MARCH

VOJVODINA beat Celtic 1-0, Rangers beat Zaragoza 2-0.

Southampton paid Blackpool 35,000 pounds for Hugh Fisher, John Mahoney joined Stoke from Crewe.

QPR beat WBA 3-2 in the first FootbaJl League Cup Final to be staged at Wembley.

A crowd of 100,000 saw Rangers fight back from a 2-0 deficit.

Eddie Firmani joined Charlton for the third time.

Maurice Setters was suspended for 28 days, Terry Venables and Fred Callaghan were each suspended for seven days.

Celtic beat Vojvodina 2-0, WBA lost 6-1 on aggregate to Bologna, Dundee United lost 3-1 on aggregate to Juventus.

George Johnston cost Arsenal 20,000 pounds from Cardiff. A similar fee was involved when Dennis Bond left Watford for Spurs. Eric Martin joined Southampton from Dunfermline.

The Football League beat the Scottish League 3-0.

Derek Dougan moved from Leicester to Wolves. Gordon Milne refused a transfer to Blackpool.

BiJly Gray was appointed manager of Notts County.

Manchester United's David Herd broke a leg but his club led Liverpool by two points.. Wolves and Coventry were level on points. QPR and Stockport remained at the head of their respective divisions. Blackpool and WBA were bottom of the senior sphere.

A toss of a coin took Rangers into the semifinal of the European Cup-Winners' Cup. Leeds lost 1-0 at Bologna.

Everton paid 80,000 pounds to Preston for Howard Kendall.


APRIL

THE BBC's one million pound offer for live coverage of soccer was rejected.

New signing-on fees scheme introduced.

Burnley drew 1-1 with Eintracht in Frankfurt. Nottingham Forest now in second place behind Manchester United. Wolves and Coventry still level on points. Celtic two points clear of Rangers in the Scottish First Division.

Tottenham, Chelsea, Leeds and Nottingham Forest progressed to the semi-finals of the FA Cup. Leicester agreed to release Gordon Banks.

Nine West Ham players fined for their poor performances in a reserve match.

Celtic beat Dukla 3-1 in Glasgow. Northern Ireland and Wales drew 0-0.

Officials of Peterborough appeared before the FL Management Committee.

Scotland became the first team to defeat England since they became World Champions, winning 3-2 at Wembley.

Banks joined Stoke for 52,500 pounds.

Eintracht beat Burnley 2-1 to win 3-2 on aggregate. Rangers beat Slavia (Sofia) 1-0 in the first leg of their ECWC semi-final. A toss of a coin took Leeds into the semi-finals of the Fairs Cup. West Ham lost 3-2 to Real Madrid in the Houston Astrodome.

Chelsea players again protested over their allocation of Cup tickets.

Enfield drew 0-0 with Skelmersdale in the Amateur Cup Final. Skelmersdale missed a last minute penalty and Enfield won the replay.

Celtic drew 0-0 with Dukla to reach the European Cup Final. Kilmarnock reached the semifinals of the Fairs Cup.

Spurs beat Nottingham Forest and Chelsea defeated Leeds United make it an all-London FA Cup Final.

Ian Ure and Allan Clarke were sent off at Fulham.

Hull City won the 'Soccer Star' Programme of the Year award.


MAY

JOHN SLEEUWENHOEK asked Astun Villa for a transfer.

Jimmy Hill. replying to I. L. Manning in the Dail Mail. said: "Leave Coventry City? You must be mad." Manchester United still three points ahead of Nottingham Forest. Coventry and Wolves still level. Aston Villa and Blackpool bottom of Division 1.

Sheffield referee David Payne attacked by a spectator on the pitch at Forest. Peter Osgood withdrew a transfer request submitted to Chelsea after they had left him out of their American tour party.

WBA sacked manager Jimmy Hagan.

Rangers beat Slavia to reach the final of the ECWC.

Cardiff won the Welsh Cup.

Tim Ward resigned as manager of Derby.

Jim McCalIiog asked SheffieId Wednesday for a transfer: Manchester United and Sunderland were interested.

United won the Division One championship. Blackpool and Aston Villa relegated. Coventry champions Division Two with Wolves runners-up and Bury and Northamton relegated. QPR won Division Three. Middlesbrough second and Swansea. Darlington, Doncaster and Workington relegated. Stockport, Southport. Barrow and Tranmere promoted from Division Four. Rochdale. York. Bradford and Lincoln successfully sought re-election.

Celtic won the Scottish Championship to complete a domestic treble (League Cup and SFA Cup).

Dick Taylor sacked as manager of Aston Villa.

Goals from Jimmy Robertson and Frank Saul gave Tottenham a 2-1 FA Cup Final victory over Chelsea, for whom Bobby Tambling scored late in the match.

Stoke failed to sign Jimmy Gabriel.

Jackie Charlton voted Footballer of the Year. Russia beat Scotland 2-0, England beat Spain 2-0 and Austria 1-0.

The Springett brothers swopped clubs-Ron to QPR and Peter to Sheffield Wednesday.

West Ham signed Bobby Ferguson from Kilmarnock (65.000 pounds) after the Scottish club had lost 4-2 on aggregate to Leeds in the semi-final of the Fairs Cup.

Celtic became the first British club to win the European Cup. After Sandro Mazzola had put Inter Milan ahead from the penalty spot. Tommy Gemmell and Steve Chalmers gave Celtic a magnificent victory.

Scotland beat Israel 2-1. Alan Ashman became manager of WBA.

Clarke and Ure suspended for seven davs. Ken MaJlender (Sheffield United) and John Gilchrist (Millwall) each fourteen davs.

Graham Moore left Northampton for Charlton, who sold Billy Bonds to West Ham.


JUNE

RANGERS lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich in the final of the ECWC.

Keith Weller joined Millwall from Tottenham.

England Under-23 eleven defeated Turkey 3-0. Paul Went signed for Charlton from Leyton Orient. England beat Borussia Dortmund 3-2 in the final of the Expo .67 tournament.

Chelsea reported to the FA by the Bermuda FA for alleged bad conduct.

Terry Hennessey asked Nottingham Forest for a transfer. It was rejected.

Sir Alf Ramsey made a nine-day tour of Mexico with the 1970 World Cup in mind.

Blackburn bought John Coddington from Huddersfield.

Chelsea sacked coach Tommy Harmer.

FA decided to allow the use of one substitute for any reason during the 1967-68 season.

Liverpool bought Tony Hateley from Chelsea.

JULY

CHELSEA signed Colin Waldron from Bury.

Allan Harris, right-back for Chelsea in the Cup Final, left to join QPR.

An American syndicate made a 1 million pound bid for Wolverhampton Wanderers, followed by a second syndicate making a bid for Aston Villa.

Four players were sent off during a match between Argentina and Colombia in the Pan-American games.

Les Shannon, sacked by Bury after they had been relegated, was reappointed full manager.

Allan Clarke, in deadlock with Fulham over terms, asked for a transfer.

West Ham signed John Cushley from Celtic.

Tommy Cummings left the managership of Mansfield to take over Aston Villa.

Rodney Marsh fractured a bone in his right foot during training.

Bobby Hope asked WBA for a transfer.

Said Everton manager Harry Catterick : "The new season could become a very robust season. I noticed it creeping in last season."

Brian Clough joined Derby as manager.

AUGUST

RANGERS paid Dunfermline 60,000 poundsfor inside-forward Alex Ferguson. I, -


Newcastle bought Jim Scott from Hibernian. Bill Nicholson was quoted as saying: "I know that teams can now change one player whether or not he is hurt. We won't."

Peter Osgood returned to the Chelsea team for a friendly against Aberdeen.

Tottenham drew 3-3 with Celtic in a Glasgow Charity match.

Sunderland made enquiries about Eddie McCreadie. Stoke signed Alex Elder from Burnley for 50,000 pounds.

Manchester United and Tottenham drew 3-3 in the Charity Shield match. Millwall paid a club record fee of 25,000 pounds to Tottenham for Derek Possee. Wolves rejected a bid from Manchester City for Ernie Hunt. Birmingham purchased Fred Pickering from Everton.

Jimmy Hill announced that he was to leave Coventry.

Swansea failed to sign John Charles.

George Curtis of Coventry broke a leg.

Jim Baxter and Terry Parmenter were ordered off at Sunderland.

Leeds lost 2-0 against Dynamo Zagreb in the first leg of their Fairs Cup Final.


SEPTEMBER

RON FLOWERS left Wolverhampton Wanderers for Northampton.

Liverpool went top of the table. Leeds drew 0-0 with Dynamo Zagreb and lost the Fairs Cup 2-0 on aggregate. Everton paid 80,000 pounds to Wolves for Ernie Hunt.

Middlesbrough rejected a bid by WBA for Geoff Butler.

Francis Lee transfer-listed by Bolton.

Charlton replaced manager Bob Stokoe with Eddie Firmani.

Liverpool beat MaJmoe 2-0. Spurs beat Hajduk 2-0, Manchester United beat Hibernian (Malta) 4-0, Nottingham Forest beat Eintracht 1-0, Hibernian beat Porto 3-0, Rangers drew I-I with Dynamo of East Germany, Celtic were defeated 2-1 by Dynamo Kiev.

Hugh McIlmoyle returned to Carlisle from Bristol City and Mike Harrison left Blackburn for Plymouth. Leeds paid Sheffield United 99,000 pounds for Mick Jones.

Peter Osgood and John Boyle fined by Chelsea for misconduct.

Geoff Butler joined Chelsea, Alan Hinton left Forest for Derby, Huddersfield signed Ray Mielczarek from Wrexham.

Spurs beat Hajduk 4-3, the Football League drew 2-2 with the Belgian League, Manchester United drew 0-0 with Hibernian (Malta) and DWS Amsterdam beat Dundee 2-1.

Gordon Clark resigned as manager of Peterborough

Leicester paid 40,000 pounds for Leeds' Willie Bell.

Sheffield United bought Willie Carlin from Carlisle.


OCTOBER

LEEDS beat Spora (Luxembourg) 9-0. Celtic drew 1-1 with Dynamo Kiev and were dethroned as European Champions after 19 weeks. Liverpool beat Malmoe 2-1. Cardiff beat Shamrock Rovers 3-1 on aggregate, Dundee beat DWS 3-0. Rangers beat Dynamo Dresden 2-1, Hibs lost 3-1 to FC Porto.

Billy Bremner suspended for 28 days and fined 50 pounds.

The Football League delayed the transfer of Francis Lee from Bolton to Manchester City.

Tommy Docherty, suspended by the FA for 28 days after being reported by the Bermuda FA, resigned as manager of Chelsea.

Noel Cantwell appointed manager of Coventry.

Referee Norman Burtenshaw was knocked out by pitch-invading spectators at Millwall. FA ordered inquiry.

Jimmy Johnstone of Celtic banned for 21 days.

York manager Tom Lockie sacked.

Celtic beat Racing 1-0 in the first leg of their trans-Continental final. Nottingham Forest defeated Eintracht 4-0, Leeds beat Spora 7-0.

Denis Law and Ian Ure sent off at Old Trafford.

England beat Wales 3-0 and Ireland beat Scotland 1-0. Chelsea appointed Dave Sexton as manager.

Fulham signed J oe Gilroy from Clyde.

Law and Ure both suspended for six weeks.


NOVEMBER

LIVERPOOL on top of Division One. QPR head Division Two.

Nottingham Forest beat FC Zurich 2-1. Racing beat Celtic 2-1.

Ronnie Simpson ko'd by a bottle before the start of the match. Scot Symon sacked by Rangers and replaced as manager by David White.

England Under-23's beat Wales 2-1. Dundee beat Royal Liege 3-1. Racing beat Celtic 1-0 in Montevideo. Six players, including Johnstone, Lennox, Hughes and Auld (who never actually left the pitch) were sent off.

Len Glover demanded a transfer from Charlton and was bought by Leicester.

Liverpool beat Munich 1860 8-0. Football League beat the League of Ireland 7-2. Rangers beat Cologne 3-0.

Preston's Ernie Hannigan transferred to Coventry. FA fined Milwall 1,000 pounds and each of the eleven Celtic players that played against Racing in Montevideo were fined 250 pounds by the club.

Coventry signed Gerry Baker.

Forest lost 1-0 to Zurich.

Manchester United took over the leadership of Division One with Blackpool and Portsmouth leading the Division Two race. In the Third and Fourth Divisions it was Walsall and Chesterfield respectively.

Manchester United drew 0-0 against Sarajevo. NAC (Holland) drew 1-1 with Cardiff. David Sadler made his England debut in a 2-0 victory over Ireland.

Coventry signed Maurice Setters from Stoke.

Football League announced that Peterborough would be relegated at the end of the season as a result of FA and FL inquiry.

Scotland beat Wales 3-2.

Tommy Docherty became manager of Rotherham.

Manchester United beat Sarajevo 2-1. Cologne beat Rangers 3-1, Ferencvaros beat Liverpool 1-0, Olimpique Lyon beat Tottenham 1-0 (Alan Mullery sent off), Standard Liege beat Aberdeen -3-0, Hibs beat Napoli 5-0 to win 6-4 on aggregate, Cardiff beat NAC 4-1, Leeds beat Partizan 2-1.

Chelsea paid Sheffield United 100,000 pounds for Alan Birchenall and United bought Colin Addison from Arsenal.

Bob McNab (Arsenal) sent off in a League Cup match at Burnley.


DECEMBER

FRANK McLINTOCK and Peter Storey (Arsenal) sent off in a League match at Burnley.

England drew 2-2 with Russia. Cyril Knowles won his first England cap.

Leeds drew 1-1 with Partizan. Aberdeen beat Standard Liege 2-0.

Preston signed Ray Charnley from Blackpool. Nottingham Forest purchased Jimmy Baxter from Sunderland for 100,000 pounds.

Tottenham beat Lyon 4-3 but were eliminated.

Portsmouth were top of Division Two, Manchester United headed the top sphere.
