1 Kevin Keegan makes his comeback after suspension in
Norway against Stromgod-set. Liverpool win 1-0 with a Ray
Kennedy goal.
2 A poor first round for British clubs in Europe sees
seven teams eliminated. Celtic are beaten in Athens 2-0,
Ipswich, Wolves, and Stoke are all out of the UEFA Cup.
But Leeds survive at Zurich, and Dundee U. are still in
the Cup-Winners' Cup.
3 Dave Sexton and Benny Fenton are the latest casualties
of the so-far disastrous season for London clubs. Brian
Mears, Chelsea's chairman, ends speculation over Sexton's
future by announcing that the manager's contract will be
honoured but he is no longer employed by the club. Sexton
won the FA Cup and the European Cup-Winners' Cup with
Chelsea, but during the last couple of seasons they have
been struggling in the bottom half of the table ... Benny
Fenton is sacked after eight years with Millwall. His
departure comes close on the heels of important changes
in the club at boardroom level... Pele retires amongst
emotional scenes in Brazil. The 'King' plays 20 minutes
for Santos and then leaves the field in tears.
4 Jimmy Armfield is the new manager of Leeds. After
thinking over the move for a few days, the ex-England
skipper decides to accept the challenge. Leeds will pay
compensation to Armfleld's previous club, Bolton, for the
loss of their manager. One of the most important tasks
facing the 38-year-old new Leeds boss is to prepare his
team for the tough Second Round European Cup tie v Ujpest
Dozsa of Hungary ... Liverpool are also paired with
Hungarian opponents. Ferencvaros ... Derby will face last
season's beaten European Cup finalists, Atletico Madrid,
in the UEFA Cup.
5 A new sad record is established in the Football League.
Eight players are sent off, the highest ever in one day
of football. The culprits include Kember, Beal, and Asa
Hartford ... Mike England scores an unusual hat-trick in
Spurs' 3-2 defeat against Burnley-two of the goals are
own goals! . . . Tottenham and Arsenal are joint last
with six points - the 'Gunners' are beaten 2-0 at Leeds,
where Duncan McKenzie scores his first goal for the club
... Ipswich lose at Q.P.R., but still lead the table, one
point in front of Manchester C. and Liverpool.
7 lan Greaves is the new Bolton manager. He was
recommended by the former boss Jimmy Armfield.
8 Mike England is recalled into the Welsh squad for the
European Championship clash against Hungary. 18-year-old
Brian Flynn of Burnley is also included ... A night of
hat-tricks in the League Cup. Malcolm Maconald scores a
hat-trick at Q.P.R. and Mike Channon helps Southampton to
a shock 5-0 win over Derby with three goals. At Fulham
the referee stops the play for 30 minutes because of
floodlight failure. Later West Ham and their goalkeeper
Mervyn Day agree to cany on under sub-standard lighting
conditions and Slough gets the winning goal for the home
team - 2-1 ... Aldershot manager Tommy McAnearney fines
Dennis Brown for throwing his shut at the bench when he
was replaced during the Halifax match.
9 Bob Paisley completes his first signing for Liverpool.
Phil Neal of Northampton joins the Cup holders for
£60,000 - a record for the Midland club... In the League
Cup, Manchester U. beat their neighbours, City, 1-0 with
a Daly penalty. 55,225 people, the season's highest
attendance, see the match and the police make no arrests
. . . Giantkillers Colchester strike again - they beat
Carlisle 2-0 at Layer Road.
10 Brian O'Neil signs for Huddersfield-the fee £40,000 .
. . Don Revie appoints Gordon Banks and George Eastham to
be in charge of the Under-23 team against Czechoslovakia
... Bill Taylor, Fulham's Scottish coach, has been asked
to assist Les Cocker with the senior team's preparation
for the European Championship.
11 Bobby Seith, manager of Hearts, resigns ... John
O'Rourke is sacked by Bournemouth, but the club retains
the player's registration ... Cruyff sues a Belgian
paper, alleging publication of an advertisement with his
picture without permission.
12 Tottenham lose at Chelsea and are now at the bottom of
the table. Ipswich draw with Leeds, Liverpool beat
Middlesbrough and the two clubs are joint League leaders
... In Scotland, Derek Parlane of Rangers scores five
goals in his club's 6-1 victory at Dunfermline ... The
League Cup draw pairs giantkillers Colchester with
Southampton, and Chester are at home to Leeds.
13 Frank Blunstone turns down Chelsea's offer to become
their manager. He prefers to stay with Manchester U. for
'job satisfaction and loyalty' . . . Czechoslovakia beat
Sweden 4-0 in their last warm-up match before their visit
to Wembley.
14 Cardiff have signed Northampton's John Buchanan in a
straight exchange for John Farrington and have also taken
young Chelsea striker Steve Finnieston on a month's loan.
15 Trevor Francis becomes the first Division One player
to score 10 league goals this season. His goal for
Birmingham is the only one of the match against champions
Leeds . . . Ipswich lose again and have now failed to
score a league goal since September 24 ... Brazilian star
Jairzinho signs for French Club Olympique
Marseille.
16 London's managerial musical chairs game is in full
swing. Dave Sexton is appointed Q.P.R. manager and Gordon
Jago takes over Millwall ... In the League, Manchester C.
beat Arsenal and join Ipswich and Liverpool on 17 points
at the top of the table ... In Cardiff, referee Alan
Turvey is attacked at half-time. It is reported that he
is punched in the chest by a supporter, while another
irate fan poured tea over him! Turvey says that he'll
report the club to the Welsh F.A. The game itself ends
Cardiff 3, York 2 - the Welsh club's first home win of
the season.
17 Spurs Manager Terry Neill signs Dundee striker John
Duncan for £125,000.
18 Six Chelsea players and trainer Norman Medhurst are
booked by the referee at Everton. After the match John
Dempsey is 'sent off' for a remark made to the official.
Ron Suart, Chelsea's acting manager, says it wasn't 'a
dirty match', four of the players having been booked for
not standing 10 yards away from a free kick. The game
ends in a 1-1 draw, so Chelsea remain unbeaten since'the
departure of Dave Sexton. But Sexton's new club, Q.P.R.,
are beaten 1-0 by Liverpool at Loftus Road ... Gordon
Jago also has an unhappy start in his new job - Millwall
are beaten 2-0 away by Bristol Rovers ... Liverpool and
Manchester C. are level on points at the top of Division
One . . . The Ipswich slump continues with a 1-0 defeat
at Upton Park v West Ham ... In Scotland Celtic score an
unexpectedly easy victory over
Hibernian-5-0!
21 Both John Dempsey (remark to the referee after a
match) and Terry Mancini (taking his shorts off as he was
leaving the pitch) are charged with conduct likely to
bring the game into disrepute ... An England XI - Don
Revie's first selection - beat Sheffield W. 5-0 in a
testimonial match . . . Billy Bremner and David Hay -
both injured - are out of the Scottish squad for the
friendly v E. Germany.
22 Bill Leivers is sacked by Cambridge U.
23 Leeds win an eventful match in Hungary. Lorimer opens
the scoring in their European Cup tie v Ujpest Dozsa, but
after 15 minutes McKenzie is sent off for retaliation.
Fazekas equalizes from a penalty, but McQueen puts the
'10-man' English champions ahead. Later a Hungarian is
also sent off, but after a Lorimer
penalty miss the game ends 2-1 to Leeds ... Otherwise it
is another dismal night for British football on the
international front. Liverpool, Derby, and Dundee U.
only manage to draw at home, Hibs lose to Juvenlus, and
the Irish teams are also
beaten. -
24 Chelsea appoint Ron Suart as manager and Eddie
McCreadie is the new first team coach. After Frank
Blunstone had turned down the Chelsea job, the Board
decided not to go outside the club to find a successor to
Dave Sexton ... Arsenal pay £20,000 to Q.P.R. for Terry
Mancini, and the veteran'centre-back will make his debut
for his new club against West Ham on Saturday ... Norwich
sign Johnny Miller from neighbouring Ipswich for £45,000
. . . Don Revie says that Alan Hardaker has assured him
of the postponement of League matches before World Cup
qualifying games in the future.
25 Hardaker denies Revie's assertions and says, 'These
are unauthorized statements, and if Mr Revie wishes to
reveal all his business with me to the Press then I wish
it to be known that I cannot co-operate.'
26 Liverpool beat Leeds 1-0 in front of the season's top
league attendance - 54,996 - and take a one-point lead in
Division One . . . Referee John Yates of Redditch is
suspended for three matches. He booked several Chelsea
players in a match last week and then allowed his
notebook to be photographed and published by the Daily
Mirror. The league emphasises that the suspension has
nothing to do with Mr Yates' refereeing, but he should
not have allowed his notes to be published... 134 goals
are scored in the Football League-the highest Saturday
haul for four years.
29 Gerry Francis of Q.P.R. is the only new cap in Revie's
first England selection ... The U-23 side beat the Czechs
3-1 with goals by Taylor, Mills, and Greenhoff.
30 An excellent start for Don Revie's England in the
European Championship. They beat Czechoslovakia 3-0 with
late second-half goals by Channon and Bell (2). Thomas,
for his first full cap, and Brooking come on as subs at
0-0 and the gamble pays dividends for the new England
manager . . . On the same night Wales beat Hungary 2-0
and N. Ireland win by the same score in Stockholm v
Sweden. Don Givens scores a hat-trick for Eire against
Russia in Dublin. Mancini and the Russian player
Kaplichny are sent off in the first half.
31 Ted Croker, F.A. Secretary, last night blasted BBC TV
for their decision to re-screen the Ali-Foreman fight,'
writes The Sun. The show goes on only minutes before the
league programme kick-off on Saturday. Croker says,
"The B.B.C pay, lip-service to having the best interests of
football at heart - but when they decisions like this,
one can only wonder about their sincerity."
