2 Kettering beat Swansea 3-1 in the FA Cup in a dramatic
match. . . Stan Bowles asks Q.P.R. for a transfer for the
second time this season ... Sir Stanley Rous is the first
winner of the J. L. Manning Award given annually for
services to sport by the Sports Writers' Association.
3 On a visit to war-damaged Cyprus, Don Revie finds the
conditions satisfactory for the European Championship tie
in February. . , According to rumours, George Best is
heading a group of businessmen who would like to take
over the Southern League club, Wimbledon.
4 Chester draw 0-0 at Newcastle in the League Cup . . .
Alex Cropley, Hibernian's Scottish international winger,
joins Arsenal for £150,000. Hibs immediately buy Ally
Macleod from Southampton (£30,000) as replacement . . .
Colin Garwood (Oldham) and Les Chapman (Huddersfield) are
involved in, a swap deal. Oldham also receive £15,000
cash adjustment for Garwood.
7 Stoke stay on top of the First Division after their 3-0
win over Birmingham . . . Crowds invade the pitch at
Hillsborough, where Sheffield W. draw 4-4 with Manchester
U. Defender Jim Holton breaks a leg. Over 100 people are
arrested and the FA are considering disciplinary action
against the clubs involved ... Jack Charlton makes an
official protest against referee Peter Reeves after his
handling of the Middlesbrough v Manchester U. League
Cup-tie last Wednesday. He is asking for another official
to be appointed for the replay .. . Stan Bowles is put on
the transfer list for 30 days only by Q.P.R. If there are
no bidders by then-and the asking price is £250,000 -
Bowles will stay with the London club . . . lan
Porterfield, the Sunderland goal scorer in the 1973 Cup
Final, sustains serious injuries in a car accident.
9 York City will fence in the Manchester United fans when
theteamsmeet at Boothman Crescent in an all-ticket League
match . . . Crystal Palace have agreed to pay £4000 to
Rothmans Isthmian League club Staines Town for their
defender John Love. It is the first time one of the new
professional clubs has received a transfer fee from a
Football League club.
10 Keith Weller asks Leicester for a transfer.
11 Q.P.R. buy Don Masson from Notts Co. for £100,000 as
a replacement for Terry Venables ... In the UEFA Cup, a
Hector goal puts Derby back in the hunt after the
Yugoslavs take a 3-0 lead, but a Bajevic penalty four
minutes from the end makes it 4-1, giving a winning
aggregate of 4-3 for Velez Mostar . . . Newcastle win the
Texaco Cup 3-0 v Southampton ... lan Moores of Stoke is
drafted into the Under-23 squad after playing only three
full League games.
12 Derby Co. send an official protest to UEFA, asking for
an annulment of the second-leg Cup tie at Mostar. They
allege that Dutch referee Charles Corver was biased
towards the home team, and has also committed several
technical errors, such as allowing Derby to kick-off at
the start of both halves of the match!... Belgium and
Holland are willing to stage the next World Cup jointly
in the event of Argentina's withdrawal . . . Oldham sign
the Bury defender Holt for £25,000 plus defender Tony
Bisley ... Leicester refuse Weller's transfer request.
14 Everton become the sixth team this season to top the
League. They beat Derby 1-0 at the Baseball Ground and
Stoke are defeated 3-1 at Leeds . . . Jn the FA Cup,
Rothmans Isthmian League club Leatherhead defeat
Colchester and Stafford Rangers beat Halifax .. . The
third round draw is made in the BBC TV studios and
broadcast live . . . Newcastle are drawn to play at home
against Manchester C. but their FA suspension means that
they cannot stage the tieit will be played at Maine
Road.
16 Arsenal put Charlie George on the transfer list, after
the player's written request isj considered by the Board.
17 Kevin Beattie disappears on his way to the Under-23
headquarters in Manchester.) The Ipswich player travells
to Carlisle instead to see his family and later says, 'I;
completely shattered. Life has got on top of me. I am no
George Best, but I just want people to realise the
pressures. I decided to go home and see my mum. She
understands me better than anybody. 1 shall want to play
for England. 1 only hope Don Revie understands, and that
my chances are not spoiled.' Revie, obviously upset,
makes no comment on Beattie's behaviour, but indicates
that he'll have a chat with the Ipswich manager, Bobby
Robson, concerning this talented young player . . , Stan
Bowles has asked to come off the transfer list for the
third time this year! Dave Sexton, the Q.P.R. boss,
agrees. 'I am delighted. 1 would have been' heartbroken
to lose a player of Start's class.'
18 Sensational results in the League Cup. Manchester U.
beat Middlesbrough 3-0, and Chester defeat Newcastle J-0
with a James goal. There are now three Second Division
clubs in the semi-finals, and one from Div. 4 ... Young
England beat Scotland 3-0 at Aberdeen'over-age'
player Dennis Tueart gets two of the goals.. In the FA
Cup replay, Wycombe beat Bournemouth 2-1. to reach the
third round for the first time in the club's history . .
. Steve Govier moves from Brighton Grimsby for £16,000.
Alan Little (Aston Villa) joins Southend for £10,000 . .
Brian Moore, the (TV commentator, has joined the
Gillingham board and say that he'll not cover their games
in the future.
19 Kevin Beattie is still unwilling to return to
football. Despite pleadings by teammates and manager
Robson, the Ipswich player does not travel with the squad
to Leicester , . . Tony Hazell joins Millwall, where
he'll play for his old Q.P.R. boss, Gordon Jago. The fee
is £40,000.
20Keith Weller stages a walk-out at Leicester. At
half-time in the match against Ipswich, the ex-skipper of
the club refuses to play on and leaves the ground before
the end of the game. Ipswich win 1-0 and are back on top
of the league ... All Manchester U. away matches will be
all-ticket affairs in the future, and the tickets must be
bought in advance. This is a joint FA and League action
to combat the hooligan element . . . Newcastle manager
Joe Harvey, whose management has been criticised by fans,
buys Geoff Nulty from Burnley and Tommy Craig from
Sheffield W. for £120,000 each.
21 Several astonishing results in Division One. Carlisle
beat Everton 34 at Goodison Park after the League leaders
establish a 2-0 lead. Luton beat Derby 1-0, and Arsen win
2-0 at Stoke with goals by Brian Kidd . . . Stan Bowles
comes back into the Q.P.R.. team with two goals at
Tottenham . . . Kevin Beattie plays for lpswich reserves,
but has to come off with a leg injury.
23 Keith Weller is put on the transfer list and fined two
weeks' wages . . . John Bond, the Norwich manager, makes
an astonishing attack on the Leicester player. He writes
to all First and Second Division managers asking them to
blacklist Weller. 'Here is the chance for managers to
unite and show they will not be party to anything like
this. Players can destroy a manager faster than we could
destroy a player's career. If Weller is allowed to get
away with this, there is nothing to stop any other player
who fancies a move doing exactly the same.'... Joe Royle
(£200,000) joins Manchester C.
26 Over 710,000 spectators watch the 45 league matches on
this Boxing Day . . . Liverpool are back on top of the
First Division after a 4-1 win over Manchester C, Brian
Hall scores two of their goals... Jimmy Robertson,
Stake's veteran winger, breaks his leg in the first
minute of the game at Coventry - Stoke are beaten for the
third consecutive time... At Leeds, the referee books
seven players in the 2-2 draw against Burnley. Manager
Adamson says, 'We were prtvoked arid we retaliated. It is
a pity this sort of thing happens, but it has happened
with Leeds for the last 10 years. Not just against
Burnley.'.. . Ken Furphy, the Sheffield U. boss, has also
complained about the opponents, after his team are beaten
1-0 at Middlesbrough. 'I counted eight cases of shirt
pulling and nine deliberate trips on my players out
there. Tony Currie was kicked five times and Len Badger
has a broken nose.
28 Luton win again! They beat Wolves 3-2 with a hat-trick
by teenager Ron Futcher. His twin brother Paul provides
the pass for the first goal... Ipswich are on top once
more, after a 1-0 win at Birmingham... In Division Two,
Manchester U. are beaten 1-0 at Oldham, in the first
meeting between the two clubs for 40 years . . . For
Sunderland, Billy Hughes scores in 14 seconds - the
season's fastest goal - but Orient equalise, and the
match ends in a 1-1 draw ... Tommy Baldwin's loan period
ends, and the Chelsea striker returns to Stamford Bridge
from Millwall... Francis Lee scores the winning goal for
Derby against his old club, Manchester C., at Maine Road.
30 Peter Osgood is for sale at Southampton. Manager
McMenemy says, 'Ossie is not a Second Division player,
and the fee will help me to strengthen the squad in
several positions.'... Four young Burnley players are
suspended for 14 days for drinking in a public house on
Christmas Eve.
31 Johan Cruyff is chosen as European Footballer of the
Year for a record third time in the poll conducted by the
periodical France Football.
