George goes to Derby . . . Jock Stein seriously injured
in a car crash . . . ex-Doncaster manager Maurice Setters
is awarded damages for unfair dismissal . . . there will
be no more replays in the European Cup final - penalties
will decide the result if extra time doesn't ... the
government working party on crowd control announces its
findings,
1 Cardiff are taken over by a group of businessmen... A
snag occurs in the reported transfer of Charlie George
from Arsenal to Tottenham. After the medical has been
satisfactorily completed, Derby County express an
interest in the player. Terry Neill says, 'I am very
disappointed, but 1 don't think anything can be gained by
going mad. It could still work out.'
2 Derby sign Charlie George for £90,000 . . . Stockporf
County are in danger of going out of business. The club
is heavily in debt and must find £25,000 to ward off
closure ... Giorgio Chinagiia, the Lazio striker says
that he is finished with Italian football and will
continue his career in the USA.
4 John Hollins, the former Chelsea captain, signs for QPR
in an £80,000 deal... Mick Dennehy goes to Walsall from
Nottingham F. and Barney Daniels (Manchester C.) agrees
to join Chester.
5 Jock Stein, the Celtic manager, is involved in a car
accident. His condition is described as 'serious' . . .
Johnny Giles is the player/manager of WBA.
7 Bill Glazier, (he veieran Coventry 'keeper, signs for
Brentford (£12,500).
10 Bob McNab, Ihe Arsenal defender, goes to Wolves on a
free transfer . . . Frank Lord leaves Crystal Palace, and
Terry Venables is their new chief coach.
11 Maurice Sellers is awarded £1340 compensation for
unfair dismissal against Doncaster Rovers. After the
court case Sellers says, 'What has happened today will
make the business of being a football manager or coach
more comfortable. We should have the same protection
enjoyed by people in other jobs.'
14 Bohemians Dublin are making precautionary arrangements
in connection with the Rangers European Cup-Winners' Cup
tie. They say that . nless they receive a 'good conduct
guarantee' from the Scottish club regarding their
supporters, Bohemians will only allocate the compulsory
200 tickets to Rangers.
15 Mike Channon hands in a written transfer request al
Southampton . . . Liverpool sign the young Wrexham
full-back, Joey Jones, for £110,000. John Neal, manager
of the Welsh club, says that he was not consulted about
the deal, and it is not in the best interests of his club
. . . Peter Latchford, who has been on loan to Celtic
from West Bromwich, signs permanently for the Scottish
club for £25,000 . . . Terry Bristey and Barry
Fairbrother move to Millwall from Orient in exchange for
winger Doug Allder - no cash is involved in the deal.
17 There will be no European Cup final replays in
future', reports the Daily Express. 'A meeting of UEFA
decided that if scores are level after 30 minutes extra
time, the title will be decided by penally kicks. The
same rule will apply to the Cup-Winners' Cup'...
Leicester sign Brian Alderson of Coventry for £150,000.
22 John Phillips, the Chelsea goalkeeper, is badly
injured in training, and will miss the first half of the
forthcoming season ... Southend will print their own
programme in the future, and the cost to fans will be
only 5p each... Stoke report a lossof £450,000 for the
1974-75 season.
24 Ipswich Town declares war on the hooligans who smear
the name of British football abroad. In a four-point
statement, the club set out their plan to ensure good
behaviour from their supporters when they go with the
team on UEFA Cup missions. 1. No-one under 18 will be
allowed on any official trip abroad unless accompanied by
an adult. 2. Inflammatory flags, banners and the drinking
of alcohol will be banned. 3. Fans making their own
travel arrangements will only be sold tickets if they
sign a form holding themselves responsible for any damage
they do. 4. European travel cards, issued to supporters,
will be withdrawn if they get into trouble.
25 Arsenal will fine players booked for dissent. Manager
Bertie Mee explains his decision, and says that Ihe club
will follow the lead set by Chelsea and Manchester C.
29 Graham Cross is suspended at Leicester. The veteran
defender is playing county cricket and hasn't reported
for training . . . Alan Ball Sr is dismissed by
Southport. Ball is working in Sweden and has failed to
return to Lancashire to take up his duties with the club.
30 Minister of Sport, Denis Howell, announces the
findings of the working party on crowd behaviour with
particular emphasis on control and safety of First
Division grounds. These clubs are to arrange meetings
with local police, magistrates, and court clerks so as to
work out a uniform policy in the treatment of soccer
hooligans. Clubs playing in Europe were told to follow
the lead of Ipswich, and introduce strict control on
their ticket allocations and travel arrangements. Sales
of alcohol should be banned on foreign trips. The working
party agrees that the use of detention centres could act
as a deterrent. 'We feel that depriving youngsters of
football or their leisure might be more effective than
fining them.' Safety at the grounds is of paramount
importance, and the findings of the Wheatley report will
be implemented. This means thai football grounds will be
licensed by the local authority. The government -
possibly through some kind of a levy - might help to
cover the expenditure involved in converting football
grounds to comply with the stiff safety regulations ...
Leeds United are beaten 4-1 by St Elienne in a pre-season
friendly - their second heavy defeat in four days.
31 Alan Foggon is suspended for two weeks at
Middlesbrough for being absent from training . . . Graham
Cross is back at Leicester, but he is not in the learn
for the opening game of the Anglo-Scotlish Tournament.
Alan Birchenall is given an opportunity to establish
himself in the defence. ..Jimmy Meliais the new manager
of Southport,
