Derby and
Rangers go out of Europe ... George Best is released by
Manchester United and plans a comeback . . . the World
Cup draw is made . . . England are out of Europe.
1 Two ex-England internationals, Francis Lee and Norman
Hunter, are sent off at Derby. After the players are
dismissed by referee Derek Nippard for fighting, they
resume the battle as they are leaving the field, and have
to be separated by teammates. Derby win 3-2 by a late
Roger Davies goal . . . The Manchester City bus taking
the players to Sheffield is involved in an accident and
goalkeeper Corrigan is injured . . . West Ham beat
Birmingham 5-1 at St Andrews, but Manchester U. are back
on top with a narrow 1-0 win over Norwich. Docherty
attacks Norwich: 'They play paraslic football', he says,
'living-off other peoples' mistakes' . . . Oivens scores
for Q.P.R. in their 1-1 draw at Coventry-his sixth goal
in eight days ... After the Millwall v Colchester match,
linesman Gerald Colyer is attacked by a group of youths
when getting into his car. He receives treatment for
concussion and bruises.
4 Crystal Palace winger Peter Taylor is sent off at
Swindon. He admits that referee Jack Taylor was right,
but the Swindon management protest against the dismissal
of Moss who was involved in the incident. Palace win 2-1
and are now four points clear at the top of Division 3
... Liverpool beat Real Sociedad 6-0 at Anfield with
teenagers Brian Kettle and Dave Fairclough in the side.
5 A depressing night for Britain in Europe. Real beat
Derby 5-1 with an extra-time goal in the European Cup,
and Rangers go out of the same competition with a 2-1
defeat against St Etienne . . . Ipswich lose 4-0 at
Bruges . . . However, the Cup-Winners' Cup is dominated
by British clubs as all three reach the quarter-finals.
West Ham (3-1 v Ararat), Celtic (3-1 v Boavista) and
Wrexham (1-1 v Stal Rzeszow) are through . . . Both W.
German clubs make the last eight in the Champions' Cup,
but in the UEFA Cup no less than 13 countries are
represented in the last 16! Only the USSR, lialy, and
Poland have two clubs left and only W. Germany and
Holland have teams still remaining in all three
tournaments.
7 Lee and Hunter will be charged by the F.A. with
'bringing the game into disrepute' . . . George Best is
suspended from playing in any country under the
jurisdiction of FIFA . . . Stan Bowies, Q.P.R.'s
controversial star, is included in the England squad for
the forthcoming Portugal match.
8 Phil Dwyer of Cardiff is given mouth-to-mouth
resuscitation at Gillingham by trainer Ron Durham and is
taken to hospital suffering from concussion. 'Phil would
have died if 1 didn't help him', said Durham ... Comedian
Eric Morecambe resigns from the Luton Board . . . Three
ex-Chelsea players - Weller, Kember, and Garland score
for Leicester in their 3-2 win over Burnley - their first
league win of the season! . . . George Best is released
by Manchester United and is free to sign for any club in
any country as the FIFA ban on him is lifted
automatically.
10 George Best signs for Stockport Co. for a month and
plays against Stoke in an exhibition match. 8000 people
see Best score, and the Fourth Division club get a 1-1
draw . . . Mike England of Cardiff City is recalled into
the Wales squad.
11 Norman Hunter is suspended for three matches as he has
accumulated 20 penalty points ... Goalkeeper Dai Davies
is out of the Welsh squad with a broken thumb ... Ron
Davies former Welsh International striker signs for
MillwaU on temporary transfer.
12 Colin Bell is seriously injured and is out of the
England squad for the match against Portugal . . . Gordon
Hill of Millwall joins Manchester United for £70,000.
"He is the last piece of the jigsaw in my
team-building,' says manager Tommy Docherty ... Portugal
draw 1-1 with the Czechs, but England still lead the
European Championship group with better goal difference.
15 John Richards scores after 16 seconds' play for Wolves
at Burnley, and the Midlanders record a 5-1 away win . .
. Two ex-Arsenal players score vital goals in the race
for the Championship. Charlie George gets Derby's winner
against West Ham, and Ray Kennedy scores in the lasl
minute at Newcastle giving a 2-1 win to Liverpool. Derby
are on top for the first time this season with Liverpool
and Manchesfer United one point behind. The London
challengers - QPR and West Ham-are in fourth and fifth
place . . . Peter Bonetti plays his JOOth game for
Chelsea in their 2-0 win over Notts County . . . Billy
Hughes of Sunderiand is taken off with a broken leg at
Charlton, but substitute Mel Holden scores twice in their
2-1 away win . . . Bell, Bowies, and McFarland are
definitely out of the England squad with injuries and
several other players are doubtful for the vital game
against Portugal . . . Brentford Chairman, Dan Tana,
makes a 'citizen's arrest' during the home game against
Watford. 'Some louts used bad language near the
directors' box,' said Tana, 'I was embarrassed for my
wife and children. So, I nabbed the worst offender and
handed him over to a policeman.'
16 Alan Ball withdraws his transfer request at Arsenal...
West Ham defender Kevin Lock is called into the England
squad . . . The Welsh FA offer a special bonus payment to
the players if they qualify for the last eight of the
European Championship.
17 UEFA fine (he F.A. of Ireland £900 because of bad
crowd behaviour during the Eire v Turkey match in Dublin
. . . Chairman Len Hawkins and director Richard Banks
resign from the Board at Luton ... The Argentinian
Government promises to provide financial backing for the
1978 World Cup.
18 The England U-23 team qualify for the quarter-finals
of the European Championship by beating Portugal 2-0 at
Crystal Palace.
19 England draw 1-1 at Lisbon, and are now on the brink
of elimination from the European Championship . . . Don
Revie suggests England need more lime to prepare for
these matches .. . Wales go into the quarter-finals by
beating Austria 1-0 at Wrexham. 33-year-old Arfon
Griffiths gets the winning goal. . . . Both Yugoslavia
and W. Germany win 1-0 against N. Ireland and Bulgaria
respectively, and are certain qualifiers . . . The Rodney
Marsh transfer to Anderlecht is off, because the player
feels that the language difficulties would create too
many problems . . . Jimmy Johnstone, the ex-Celtic and
Scotland winger, signs for Sheffield United.
20 Unseeded England are drawn with Italy, Luxembourg, and
Finland in the 1978 World Cup. Wales and Scotland are in
the same group as each other together with Czechoslovakia
. . . N. Ireland have the difficult task of competing
with Holland, Belgium and Iceland. Don Revie says: 'We
are very fortunate to be in a section like this. Italy
will be the test. They have a lot of great players. But
we're given a chance and it's entirely up to us to get
busy and qualify. '.. Tony Currie comes back from Lisbon
in a wheelchair suffering from appendicitis and will have
to undergo an operation ... Alan Hardaker attacks Revie,
'It would not have made a scrap of difference to
England's performance if League matches had been
postponed. We smacked of excuses before we even left for
Portugal. At present it is all money, money, money! Wales
got exactly the same co-operation as England and they
have done well.' Revie answers: 'This is one of the
biggest shocks of my life. It is hard to believe that a
person in a responsible position should say such things.
The players have never discussed money - they have run
themselves into the ground. If you get a chance to
prepare and you don't qualify, then you have no excuses.
But you must get the chance to prepare properly I'
22 Ten League clubs fail to defeat non-League clubs in
the First Round of the FA Cup. Six League clubs are
beaten and four can only draw. Among the surprises are
Coventry Sporting's win over Tranmere, and Hendon's
defeat of Reading ... Sammy McIlroy is carried off with a
jaw injury at Highbury, where Manchester United lose 3-1
... In the first division only four points separate the
top eight clubs.. . Italy beat Holland 1-0, but the Dutch
national side are in the last eight of the European
Championship as group winners on goal average over
Poland.
23 Czechoslovakia win 3-0 in Limassol and as a result
England are out of the European Championship.
24 In answer to Alan Hardaker's criiicisms, the England
players led by Gerry Francis volumeer to donate their
match fees against Italy to charity .,. The PFA annual
meeting backs Derek Dougan's proposals concerning the
'freedom of contract' issue . . . George Best, once again
on the comeback trail, scores twice in the Peter Osgood
Testimonial match at Chelsea.
25 Millwall draw with Yeovil in an FA Cup replay, and
Millwall manager Gordon Jago reportedly launches an
attack on his players: 'They were disgraceful, not an
ounce of character. If I could slop their appearance
money, I would.'
26 Dover become the fourteenth non-League club to reach
Round Two of the FA Cup. They beat Colchester 4-1 in
extra time in their replay .. . The Irish club Home Farm
complains that Aston Villa have illegally approached
their 17-year-old player Martin Murray.
27 Bryan Hamilton joins Everton from Ipswich for
£40,000... A revised form of freedom of contract system
is accepted by the Joint Committee and will be
recommended to the clubs and the players . . . Alan
Hardaker assures Don Revie that the England squad will
have sufficient time to prepare for the World Cup
qualifying matches ... Wales will also be given
assistance to have all their players available for the
European Championship quarter-finals.
28 Derby pay £300,000 for Lerghton James of Burnley.
Dave Mackay says: 'I would have taken us to win the
championship again. But now we must be even a better bet.
James will give our attack extra width' ... George Best
scores twice against Swansea, in his first League game
for Stock port.
29 Bill Garner of Chelsea is sent off at Bristol Rovers -
his second dismissal this season .. . Sunderland and
Crystal Palace are drawing clear of their challengers in
Division Two and Three respectively.
