'Freedom of
contract' draws nearer . . . Fronds Lee's knuckles are
rapped . .. Derek Dougan makes a comeback... attendances
on the increase.
2 The transfer market becomes more active, as
Middlesbrough pay £75,000 for Phil Boersma of Liverpool,
and Jimmy McIlvraith signs for Bury ... Bill Garner of
Chelsea is suspended for four games.
3 Luton are facing a grave financial crisis, and they
call a special meeting of the shareholders.
4 Andy Grey of Aston Villa is included in the Scotland
senior squad for the international against Rumania. ..
Chelsea are reported to be considering a bid for George
Best - on a special match fee basis linked to
attendances.
5 Luton Town are in serious financial difficulties. A
First Division club less than nine months ago, they will
go out of business if they cannot get additional finance
within a few days. Their bankers have refused to extend
their credit, and the directors have to pay the wages
bill this week from their own pockets. .. Bobby Gould
rejoins Wolves for £30,000 from West Ham . . . Only
Leeds win of the top eight teams and now only one point
separates the first six clubs in Division One ... Three
players are sent off in four minutes at the Brentford v
Rochdale match ... Southport win their first League match
of the season.
7 Luton's Peter Anderson signs for Antwerp in an £80,000
deal. The money will help Luton's financial problems.
Their chief executive Davies Mortimer says: 'Now we can
get on with other measures needed to set the club to
rights.'
9 Francis Lee of Derby is banned for four games and fined
£200 for 'bringing the game into disrepute'. Leeds
defender Norman Hunter who had been involved with Lee in
Ihe incident is cleared of the same charge ... Derek
Dougan is back in football as player/manager of Kettering
. .. Alan Ashman is the new manager of Workington.
10 Liverpool reach the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup by
beating Slask Wroclaw 3-0 (agg. 5-1) with a hat-trick
scored by reserve striker, 21-year-old Jimmy Case.
Surprise of the round - Levski Spartak's victory over
Ajax Amsterdam . . . West Ham lose 1-0 at home to
Fiorentina, and the Italians collect the re-incarnated
Anglo-Italian Cup . . . Derek Dougan says that a
'football levy board' must be set up by the Government to
save clubs from going out of business ... Wales are to
consider an offer to stage their European Championship
quarter-final at Wembley. Secretary Trevor Morris says:
'Money is not everything. A move from Cardiff or Wrexham
would be a betrayal'... It is announced that England will
play in a four-nations tournament in America in May.
Italy, Brazil, and the U.S.A. are the other likely
participants.
11 An informal meeting of club chairmen endorses the
'freedom of contract' proposals. But Arsenal chairman,
Dennis Hill-Wood warns: 'When Jimmy Hill got rid of the
maximum wage, 5000 professional footballers became 2500.
If freedom of contract goes through now, the 2500 could
become 1000 within a year.' At the same meeting, the FA
and Football League agree on a new system to give the
international squad more time for preparation - details
of the plan will be released later . . . Peter Marinello
goes to Motherwell for a £35,000 fee ... Martin Murray,
the Home Farm player, who has been watched by several
League clubs, signs for Everton.
13 Scarborough are the only non-league club to reach the
third round of the F.A. Cup, but four other non-league
clubs are involved in re-plays. In the League, four teams
share first place and only 3 points separate the top
eight. . . Two ex-intemaiionals. Peter Storey and Johnny
Giles are sent off, and as he is leaving the pitch,
Storey is attacked by an irate Stoke fan at the Victoria
Ground.
14 Important decisions are approved at the Football
League meeting. The peace formula between the clubs and
Don Revie will enable the England squad to spend nine
days together before a midweek international, providing
the players will be released to play for their clubs on
the intervening Saturday. From next season, referees will
use the yellow and red cards system in domestic football.
.. . Alun Evans (Aston Villa) signs for Walsall for
£3000.
15 The Football League refuses to allow Rodney Marsh to
be registered with an American Club and play for Crystal
Palace on loan. Marsh says: 'It is costing me a fortune.
I certainly feel the Football League are depriving me of
my livelihood' . . . West Ham are told to build a wall,
to rule out pitch invasion, at a cost of around £40,000.
16 Local referee Alan Turvey abandons the Tooting v
Leatherhead F.A. Cup re-play in the 57th minute due to
ground conditions . .. The FA turns down the request of
three clubs to switch their Third Round ties to January 1
in order to avoid, clashes with other games in their
area. One of the clubs concerned is Chelsea and their
chairman Brian Mears says that he'll fight the ban.
Orient boss Brian Winston says: 'They are trying to kill
us. We would have 15,000 on New Year's Day, but with West
Ham and Tottenham playing at home, we'll be lucky to get
3000 against Cardiff City.'
17 Scotland draw with Rumania 1-1 in their last European
Championship match. Rioch scores from a free-kick, but
Crisas equalises. Doyle of Ayr U. and Andy Grey, the
young Aston Villa striker, collect their first full caps.
18 The FA yield to pressure and allow two cup ties to be
played on New Year's Day... A fund in the region of
£500,000 will be available for the clubs to improve
safety condilions al the grounds. The money will be
provided by the Pools Promoters Association.
20 Liverpool are back on top after beating QPR 2-0 wilh a
John Toshack goal and a Phil JMeal penalty .. . Allan
Clarke scores his 100th goal for Leeds - the only goal in
the match v Aston Villa . .. Crystal Palace lose their
unbeaten away record at Millwall... Billy Jennings scores
a hat-trick for West Ham against Stoke's England
international goalkeeper Peter Shilton.
22 It is announced that the Cup Final will be played late
in May next season to give the England squad more time
together. Other plans include permission for teams to
cancel their League matches if two or more of their
players are involved in a midweek international and the
playing of a round of the League Cup before the start of
the Championship . . . Alec Stock says that referees are
spoiling football by booking players for innocuous
offences.
23 Aston Villa pay £175.000 for Dennis Mortimer of
Coventry. Jimmy Hill says: 'Our supporters might be
disappointed but this sale ensures Coventry's future for
the next five years'.. . Bobby Collins resigns at
Huddersfield.
26 Despite the B.R. shut-down, 630,367 people watch
Boxing Day football and seven clubs have the highest
attendances of the season. Liverpool are back on top
after their 1-1 draw at Stoke. Leeds win at Maine Road -
a first home defeat for Manchester City and the first
defeat of any kind for 18 matches ... City's Peter Bames
goes off with a hairline fracture of the shoulder ...
Leighton James scores his first goal for Derby, but the
Champions are beaten 2-1 at Leicester... Warwick Rimmer
of Crewe is sent off a few days after his club was warned
by the FA concerning their players' behaviour.
27 The increase in attendances continues - 777,627
spectators attend League matches ... Keith Robson is sent
off as West Ham are defeated by Ipswich. Liverpool are
still on top, but Leeds collect maximum points in the
holiday games and are only one point behind with a game
in hand . . . Ron Moore of Tranmere scores four goals in
a match for the second time this season . . . Jimmy
Greaves makes his debut for Brentwood in the Essex Senior
League.
29 Derby's David Nish has an exploratory operation on his
knee but is assured that there are no permanent problems
... John Deacon, the chairman of Portsmouth, refuses to
resign at the club's annual meeting, despite strong
pressure from the directors . . . Don Revie calls the
peace formula with the League a 'great breakthrough' and
says 'there are DO excuses now if we do badly in the
World Cup qualifying matches.'
