1 Further managerial recruitments at Fulham - Bertie Mee,
ex-Arsenal boss and Len Shackleton, the old England
player, join the club as 'advisers' . . . East Germany
beat Poland 3-1 in the Olympic Games Final, the Soviet
Union are third, Brazil fourth.
2 Aston Villa sign Gordon Smith, St. Johnstone's under-23
Scottish international defender, for £80,000 . . .
Cruzeiro win the South American Cup - the first Brazilian
club to do so for 15 years.
3 Manchester United and Ajax directors meet in Amsterdam
to discuss the biggest ever 'anti-hooligan' operation in
connection with their UEFA-Cup matches ... Players sent
off in English League or Cup matches will no longer be
banned from European competitions or internationals.
Suspensions will only apply for domestic football . . .
Bob Wilson, the ex-Arsenal 'keeper, rejects an offer by
Fulham to resume his career. Wilson, 34, still has a year
to run of his BBC contract as a presenter of Football
Focus.
4 The European season opens early with a preliminary tie
in the Cup-Winners' Cup at Cardiff. The Welsh side beat
Servette 1-0 with a late Tony Evans goal. The Swiss club
include their new signing from Tottenham, Martin Chivers
. . . Luton Town are sued by former chairman Len Hawkins
for the repayment of a £5000 loan . . . Norwich striker
Ted MacDougall is banned for the opening two games of the
League season, having been sent off in Norway in a
friendly.
7 Bigger crowds, but fewer goals on the opening day of
the Anglo-Scottish Cup. 85,341 people see the 12 games in
which only 10 goals are scored.
10 Malcolm Macdonald scores his first goals for Arsenal
in Zurich. He gets two goals against Grasshoppers in a
friendly . . . Jimmy Conway of Fulham signs for
Manchester City.
11 Cardiff reach the First Round proper of the 'Recopa' -
a Derek Showers' goal puts them ahead in Geneva, and Ron
Healey saves a penalty before Servette score twice. But
the Welsh Cup holders' 'away goal' gives them the tie ...
David Johnson refuses to join Tottenham from Ipswich, and
is considering a similar offer from Liverpool . . . Pat
Crerand takes over as Northampton's new manager . . .
Tottenham ban former manager Terry Neill from their
boardroom . . . Tommy Baldwin becomes a non-league player
with Gravesend.
12 David Johnson's transfer from Ipswich to Liverpool is
completed - the player will be eligible for the European
Cup. The price - £200,000 . . . Fulham gamble on George
Best and Rodney Marsh to boost their gates and help the
club into Division One. Both sign lucrative long-term
contracts and are expected to return from the USA early
in September.
13 Alan Whittle leaves Sheffield United after a few weeks
with the club . . . Palace reject a Leeds offer for Peter
Taylor, and in turn Leeds reject a bid for Joe Jordan
from Holland.
14 A record gate of 76,500 people see Liverpool beat
Southampton 1-0 in the Charity Shield match at Wembley.
Toshack scores the only goal early in the second half in
a mediocre opener to the League season... Bolton,
Nottingham Forest, Orient, and the only First Division
club, Newcastle, reach the quarter-finals of the
Anglo-Scottish Tournament ... In the first leg Round One
matches of the League Cup, three players are sent off.
15 Following crowd disturbances and attacks on the
Liverpool players at Wembley, the FA are considering the
erection of a protective wall over the players' entrance.
Ted Croker says: 'We daren't risk any crowd scenes being
responsible for getting England banned from international
competitions.'
16 Norwich sign John Ryan, the Luton defender, for
£40,000.
17 Peter Taylor scores the winning goal in Crystal
Palace's 1-0 away win in the League Cup v Portsmouth . .
. Alan Mullery's Brighton also win - the first success
for the new manager ... A Fulham Boardroom shake-up
elevates Ernie Clay on the Directors' list, but Alec
Stock remains manager.
18 Eddie Baily, the ex-Tottenham coach, is the new chief
scout of West Ham. He takes over from Wally St. Pier, who
has retired after 47 years with the club.
19 Guest speaker Don Revie, at the Rothmans Football
Yearbook's annual luncheon says: 'The quicker we realize
that sponsorship is the answer to the game's financial
problems the better. I have taken a good deal of
criticism, which I haven't enjoyed, because I have
organized sponsorship for the England team. But it takes
£500,000 a year just to keep the FA going. If there is
good money in sponsorship, it should be accepted' ...
Gordon Lee, Newcastle manager, says that Malcolm
Macdonald isn't worth the money Arsenal have paid for
him. 'I would not have paid £100,000' . . . FA Secretary
Ted Croker writes to the 92 League clubs asking them to
contact their local water boards to see how they can help
in the drought . . . Holders Manchester City draw 1975
winners Aston Villa in the Second Round of the League Cup
. . . Orient buy Derek Clarke from Oxford for £10,000 .
. . General Omar Carlos Actis, President of the World Cup
Organizing Committee, is murdered by terrorists in Buenos
Aires. The 56-year-old General had been preparing to hold
a Press Conference When he was ambushed and assassinated
in his car.
21 The League season opens with an increase in
attendances, but regrettably with trouble on and off the
field. Charlie George of Derby, David Jones of Everton,
Hereford's Shane Walker, and Brian Stubbs of Notts Co.
are sent off. There is fighting and arrests at several
places - some supporters attempt to set fire to the
Ipswich stand. Leeds draw with WBA. West Brom's
player/manager is Leeds long-serving star Johnny Giles .
. . Bristol City, back in Division One after a 65-year
absence, start with a surprise win at Highbury, where
Paul Cheesley scores for them ... In Division Two,
newcomers Bill Rafferty (Carlisle) and Dixie Deans
(Luton) both score twice giving their respective teams
two points each . . . George Best is at Fulham but only
as a spectator.
Charge George is fined
by Derby for being sent off, but manager Mackay pleads
for him: 'I hope he won't be crucified for one mistake' .
. . There might be a delay over George Best's
registration for Fulham. League Secretary Alan Hardaker
says: 'As far as we are concerned, George Best doesn't
exist in this country. When the application is received
it might go to the full Management Committee, which
doesn't meet until September 19' ... The FA are
considering issuing season tickets for Wembley
internationals in order to 'reward' those people who
attend games against lesser opposition.
24 Larry Lloyd of Coventry City, back in action after an
eight-month injury, is sent off against Manchester United
. . . Peter Lorimer is on the transfer list at Leeds . .
. Doncaster beat Lincoln on penalty kicks after extra
time in a League Cup replay -the first time that this
ruling has been used in a major English cup competition.
25 At Stamford Bridge, 'Cash for Chelsea' leaflets are
handed out to spectators asking them to sponsor the club
during the coming season. 'It was touch and go whether
Chelsea started this football season and unless things
improve this year, Chelsea FC will cease to exist' warns
the leaflet. In the meantime the team draw 1-1 with Notts
Co. ... In other matches Liverpool win, by their
customary 1-0 score, at WBA and are the only club in the
top two divisions with maximum points from two matches .
. . Malcolm Macdonald scores his first league goal for
Arsenal at Norwich, where Arsenal win 3-1.
26 Rodney Marsh is back with Fulham - the club which
first introduced him to league football . . . Glen Keeley
signs for Blackburn . . . Peter Shilton is back in the
England squad for the Eire game. The Stoke goalkeeper
three months ago opted out of playing permanent
understudy to Clemence. But he has phoned Don Revie and
asked to be reinstated. Charlie George is also in the
squad.
28 Five goalless draws in Division One on the first 'wet'
day of the season. One of these, the Derby v Manchester
U. clash, ends in an uproar as rival fans stage a bloody
battle on the pitch. Thirty-five spectators are hurt and
three policemen are taken to hospital . . . There is also
serious crowd trouble at Nottingham where Wolves beat
Forest 3-1 . . . Aston Villa lead the First Division with
four points and better goal difference than eight other
clubs on the same mark . . . Chelsea (5 points) are the
top club in Division Two, and Rotherham and Stockport are
the respective leaders of the lower divisions . . . Terry
Yorath (£125,000) and lan Wallace (£40,000) from
Dumbarton join Coventry, while lan Moores, at the bargain
price of £75,000, is the new striker Spurs have been
searching for.
29 Despite the Bank Holiday weekend, the football
authorities begin to act on the fearful crowd scenes at
Derby. An FA spokesman says: "The public must know
we are going to do everything in our power to conquer
this evil.' Tommy Docherty: 'If that's what happens when
we draw 0-0, what will those idiots do when we lose? I'm
in favour of bringing back the birch.' Dave Mackay:
'There is a limit to how much we can do. No matter how
tough you are there's no way a few men can stop a mob on
the rampage.' Measures suggested were long imprisonment
for offenders, fencing-in of fans, and closing of
grounds.
30 Millwall beat Colchester on penalties in the League
Cup . . . General Merlo is appointed as head of the World
Cup organizing committee in Argentina in place of his
assassinated predecessor.
31 lan Moores scores his first goal for Tottenham in the
2-1 surprise win at Middlesbrough in the League Cup . . .
Marsh makes his debut for Fulham in a disappointing draw
with Peterborough at Craven Cottage.
