24 While Hereford, managed by John Charles, were winning an F.A. Cup replay at Northampton, Bristol C., with penalty goal by Sharpe, were by-passing Fulham into the semi-final of the League Cup. . . Ralph Coates, Burnley star, injured in training, out for five weeks with ligament trouble.. . .

25 England defeated East Germany 3-1 at Wembley before 93,000 . . . good performance in first international of season. . . Peter Shilton got his first cap as Gordon Banks by-passed, and Sadler at centre half. . . Sir Alf Ramsey's comment, 'I was very happy. They all played well against good opposition' . . . Aston Villa moved into semi-final of League Cup with 1-0 win over Bristol R., so in 48 hours dreams of an all-Bristol final at Wembley were ended. . .
