No Automatic Autographs

Sir Geoff

Sir Geoff Hurst

This item appeared in 'Match' Magazine, 25 November, 2000.

THE COMPLAINT ... from reader Nicky Sarti of Northampton "I was just reading your latest letters in MATCH and I thought I'd give you some names to start off the 'list of shame' on players who don't sign autographs I have a photograph of the 1966 World Cup Final team with eight signatures from the players on it, including the captain Bobby Moore.

But Martin Peters and George Cohen are yet to reply to me and Sir Geoff Hurst, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup Final, wants 40 pounds to sign it!

He stated in a letter from his agent that all of the 1966 team would charge the same amount, but the eight signatures I already had didn't cost me a penny "I can understand that there are those individuals who are hell bent on spoiling it for those genuine collectors of autographs, but what the players don't always realise is that it is us genuine fans who have purchased their endorsed products and paid hard-earned money to watch them out on the pitch"

THE REPLY... from Sir Geoff Hurst's agent, David Davies "For years the players from the 1966 World Cup team, which I look after have signed autographs for nothing and they do still do that at events they go to.

"Around 18 months ago we discovered that we were getting a number of requests from people pretending to be children and then we would see the autographs up for auction on the charity website. The reason we knew this was because we marked the autographs we were sending off so that we could track if they were being auctioned off and we found some of them at the auctioneers Christies.

"If we are 100 per cent sure that a request IS from a fan then we will send out the autograph, but we get lots of requests coming from the same addresses but written by different people - SO we know these people are dealers Some dealers say they are writing on behalf of charities or that they are children, so we have to examine every request.

"Now some of these disgruntled dealers are trying to do everything to name and shame us. Sir Geoff gets 70-100 requests for his autograph each week and if he thinks there is a problem with any of them, then we send out this letter and he signs the rest. Children are going to find it more and more difficult to get autographs because of these dealers and we're sorry if anyone sending a genuine request gets a letter from us, but we have to be wary of the dealers. Charities should use proper headed paper when they write to us and they won't have a problem."

Please feel free to cut and paste this letter into an email to Sir Geoff's agent ...

FA Cup History - Goalie's Goal !

This item by David Parsons appeared in the 12 November, 2000, No.34 edition of 'The Non League Paper'...

HISTORY REPEATS itself at Bamet as Hampton and Richmond aim to go one better than the last time the two clubs met in the FA Cup. That was in 1977 when a Barnet side brimming with former intemationals won 2-1 thanks to a goal from the then veteran Jimmy Greaves. The match featured on Match of the Day and made Hampton's Alan Cooling famous as the first goalkeeper in the history of the competition to score from open play. His kick stunned star names such as former Arsenal full back Bob McNab (Arsenal) and Chelsea defender John Dempsey (Chelsea).

To see how this years encounter went see Next Generation News.

FA Cup Draw - Goalie versus George !

The draw for the Second Round of the FA Cup this year was made by George Best and Kim Book. Kim has his place in football history as the goalie that let in 6 goals from George Best in the 1969-70 FA Cup ! It was Northampton Town's big day as they faced Manchester United at home in this 5th Round tie on the 7 February 1970. Two much travelled stars scored for Northampton that day Frank Large and Richard 'Dixie' McNeil. Their contribution has now been mostly forgotten as Man U hit in 8 - Brian Kidd scoring the other 2. See Cobbs Gallery

Northampton were picked to play away to Rotherham ... George's final League team, Bournemouth (!), were picked for a home tie to Stoke City or Nuneaton ...

Goalkeeper Kim will even have figured in one of the year's top Movies as Best's double hatrick was featured in the biopic, 'Best'. See

John McGovern

Ilkeston Town - 10th in the 22 team Dr Martin's Premier League - have appointed John McGovern (Derby County) as their manager. Here's how the 'Non League Paper' (No.33, 5 November 2000) reported it this way ...

JOHN McGOVERN, the new llkeston Town manager, has spent the majority of his career in the company of CIoughs, writes David Parsons.

McGovern played under Brian at Hartlepool, Derby, Leeds and Nottigham Forest where he won a European Cup medal and made more than 300 League appearances.

Now the connectin will continue as MeGoyem will pit his wits against Nigel's Burton Albion in the Dr Martens Premier Division.

McGovem said: "I have known Nigel since he was a baby and respect the job he has doae at Burton. He is well established and you mast give him a pat on the back for that.

"Nigel gave me a call on Wednesday after I was appointed and wished me the best of luck. I appreciated that, but I would expect nothing less of the Clough family because they are nice people."

McGovern who was working as a journalist and after dinner speaker jumped at the chance of a return to football management.

He said, "I have retained my enthusiasm for football and believe the deal the club came up with will benefit both parties. I am not on a contract but am looking forward to workingh with players again.

"I hope I can bring a professional attitude to the club and new ideas. I will make sure training is hard work but also enjoyable.

"I will also bring nine years of experience in football management and 20 years experience in top flight football."
